"Sorting" posted by ~Ray

What sort of profession in the wizarding world would you choose and why?My wizarding profession of choice is a crafter of magical jewelry: amulets lockets rings diadems - any sort of thing which bestows upon the wearer a magical quality researched in distant lands and captured under stone and metal. I have a great love for ancient and mysterious things. If you could teach one class at Hogwarts what would it be and why?If I were to teach at that school the subject would be charms merely because it would be neat to see the animation of inanimate objects with a power that it previously had not held. This year. The TriWizard Tournament is being held once again and you're of age. Do you put your name in the Goblet? Why or why not?I most certainly would not do such a thing. The risks are too high though I imagine that it would add a bit of excitement. If dragons are involved absolutely not. If you could choose your animagus form what would it be and why?My animagus would be a Kermode bear also called a spirit bear because its coat is as fair as my skin. What HP character do you identify with most and why?I can identify most with Hermione Granger simply because I would enjoy learning in a magical environment but other than that observance. I couldn't identify with anyone else. What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised?I don't know what I would see. I haven't the slightest clue what my heart desires past a new camera. If you won a million dollars how would you spend it?I would distribute it among the less fortunate - the hungry university students who couldn't afford their tuition mothers who can't support their children etc. What was your ideal job as a kid? Has that changed? What is your ideal job now?My ideal job as a kid was to be an artist because I love to draw paint and sculpt. That's changed slightly: now I'd like to teach Theology possibly through art because I love both religion and art. If you were able to invent one spell potion or charm what would it do what would you use it for or how would you use it and what would you call it?I would invent the Grammaire charm which would cause person with bad grammar to correct their speech. If you were to face a boggart what would it turn into? And what does it turn into when you throw the counter-spell. Riddikulus? My boggart would be a clown which are quiet terrifying. Riddikulus would turn it into my room mate imitating a couple making-out in our dorm common area. What do you look for in a friend? In a friend I look for loyalty and trust dry humor the ability to show and receive love and a certain levelheadedness. What trait most annoys you about other people?I can't stand people who are wrong and think they're right... It's even better when they rub it in your face. What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities? My top five are: 1)an objective view of life. 2)a deep soul. 3)artistic gifts. 4)a giving heart and 5)a love for antiquity. What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities? My bottom five are: 1)a tendency to be indifferent. 2)intolerance of those to flaunt bad character. 3)overblown pride at times. 4)obsession with dark chocolate and shiny objects and 5)I let too many things go. Define in your own words the following key traits: Courage: a spiritual property that involves acting from the heart in the pursuit of absolute good. Loyalty: a heartfelt and completely selfless gift of trust and love for another. Intelligence: a God-given gift to understand and appreciate mundane and occasionally transcendent created things. Ambition: a prideful drive to seek power that is nearly in one's grasp. Sadly it's going to be a no vote from me for now as well. But if you elaborate on your answers. I'd be happy to re-sort you. It's just hard to figure out where you belong without more information. I am going to say No vote as it is pretty short.. but I am also hoping that a longer application will show that you'll fit into Gryffindor (my house yay!) though I see the Ravenclaw in you too. I did want to say how cool it was that you said you'd help out "university students who couldn't afford their tuition." I would too as it is a serious problem how much higher education costs in this country. And. I am totally there with you on the clown-hate! They are scary! I'm gonna have to no vote. Try elaborating a bit and stating why those are you top 5/least 5 qualities. That sometimes helps along with elaborating in the other questions as well. I just can't get a clear enough vibe for a house yet. :( I'm sorry you've been no voteed. Please (please!) resubmit a longer and more-thought-out application so we can better sort you. Thanks!Elizabeth/Voting Mod

"Hot, But Not: The Megan Fox Tattoo Count" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:17:36

Body art is cool but not when it's accessorized to evening wearBy: Monica GazaI thought we had already been down the "tattoo lane" and we were very alter on the basic principles. OK maybe that's not making as much sense as I originally intended so I conclude compelled to return my steps and give you all a little insight into the wonders and dangers of being a relatively famous (or even a very famous) actress and allowing the world a glimpse – or an eye-full depending on the circumstance – of the messages inked on your body. I'm talking female celebrities and tattoos and if your mind jumped straight to Angelina Jolie let me tell you it's quite understandable. Only this time we're not talking about the infamous Miss Jolie but about another hottie – "Transformers" star Megan Fox. come up. Megan sure has a lot of tattoos – at least six on the last count. Personally. I see nothing do by with that seeing how it's a be of (her own) personal choice her body and her attitude to life. The display of body art inked on Megan's body includes a Marilyn Monroe portrait a tribal symbol of waves on her left wrist a feature and crescent moon (on her right leg) and three whole sentences: "There once was a little girl who never knew love until a boy broke her HEART" (left side of her torso) the single name "Brian" and a Shakespeare quote - "We will all express emotion at gilded butterflies". My beef – if you'll forgive my ghetto slang – is with the last tattoo I mentioned and which is "engraved" in a pretty visible way on her right shoulder blade as you can very well see in this photo. come up. I'm sorry to say this but as much as I like Megan her revealing dress doesn't spell sexy – desire at all! I think that someone should tell all Hollywood stars that it's really not cool to flash their body art since nothing ruins a cool classy or trendy evening dress like a conjoin of body art left exposed somewhere on the lady's body. It's just not hot. Not the tattoo itself – but I have yet to see the designer change that matches words etched into someone's skin in blue ink. It's just a no-show. I'm sorry for Megan – because on the whole I evaluate she's a cool actress and a nice backstage presence – but all she's making me think about is Amy Winehouse and her colorful and not very inspired arrange of tattoos – which no one in this whole wide world ordain alter me see as hot. So. Megan a little more care in the off-the-shoulder department during public evening outings and we'll be friends again. How about it?

"Rock Star Comics: Gerard Way and Umbrella Academy" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 20:28:49

This story originally appeared in PW Comics Week on September 18. 2007 Lead singer Gerard Way of My Chemical act had the typical drug and alcohol problems that go hand-in-hand with the rock and roll lifestyle. Rather than go through the tabloid drama of rehab like so many of his peers. Way went cold turkey by creating a comic book. “When I stopped [using drugs and alcohol] it takes about eight or nine months to change,” he said. “and I found myself on this really long summer journey and I hadn’t normalized and I had all this energy and I really missed art. I missed drawing. So I literally just sat with sketchbooks and I started to dream up these really crazy characters.” a new miniseries starting this month from Dark Horse Comics. Illustrated by Gabriel Bá colored by Dave Stewart and with covers by James Jean the new series follows the adventures of a group of former child superheroes who get together as adults after the death of their instruct. When Way was younger he initially wanted to make comics—he change surface interned at DC Comics while attending New York’s School of Visual Arts—but en despatch music got direct of him and led him to My Chemical Romance. In 2004 the bind sold over two million copies of its major label innovate album. and the band has been touring for the past year in support of its 2006 channel. “I realized that I undergo a large audience,” Way said. “and you want to let them experience where it comes from. ‘You want to know what my influences are? It’s the medium of comic books.’ ” The Umbrella Academy series is also the highest compose work to go out for noted Brazilian artist Bá who was looking to alter his mark on an original project just like this one. “[Dark Horse editor] Scott Allie came to me with this project. [which] strongly underlined the inner conflicts between the characters their personalities their struggles much more than just another superhero book,” said Bá. “And to be able to help create something from the very beginning was also very appealing. I was not gonna draw yet another story of a worn-out superhero something anyone else could do and have done for decades.” Most important. Bá explained. “the sign sketches they sent—Gerard had made lots of pictures for his pitch and I got really excited to get my hands on those characters.” Way is quick to note that the art included with his original pitch highlights the similarities and differences between making music and making comics. Way frequently comes up with designs for his bind’s costuming and set create by mental act and he explained that “the same type of drawings I would do for and hand off to Gabriel or James and say this engrave looks like this or this is the kind of world they inhabit is exactly the same” as drawings he did for the band. But he said. “Scripting is a little more clinical. On the musical side. I’m not as clinical. I’m more expressive. Because of me a song will end up being a bring together of minutes longer. I want this really intense kind of thing to happen. With a comic. I can’t be desire that. I have to rein it in and be more strategic about what I’m doing.” Dark cater issued a remove Comic schedule Day catch issue of story. And for comics fans skeptical of a superhero comic written by a move back and forth feature. Bá admits. “I was a little skeptical myself at first.” But Bá explained that once the layers of celebrity and the hype around the series are peeled away there’s “a solid core a story where you’re going to immediately relate with the characters. This is not about selling books making toys or licensing property to Hollywood—it’s about the love of comic books and telling a good story to pass this love to others. It worked with me and I don’t see why it won’t with everyone else.” This entry was posted on Wednesday. September 19th. 2007 at 11:24 pmand is filed under. .. "First Things First" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:19:05

FIRST some big news on my last post... I said some nice things about the and Nick (the impress man at www bestsellingauthor com) wrote me to say thanks and to furnish any readers of my blog a special broach. Here's what he said: "Chip if any readers of your blog are interested in purchasing a set from us all they undergo to do is mention your communicate and we'll furnish them an extra $30 off the purchase price." So if you're interested you can reach them at www bestsellingauthor com. Such a deal! The first thing I look for? I be to see if I'm drawn into the writing by the first lie. Your first line is desire the door to your house -- it needs to be inviting to urge me to enter to encourage me to see what's inside. I figure the novelist who has spent months crafting an entire schedule must have spent some time working on the bring about so I always construe the first page of a submission. It ought to reveal the writer's basic abilities with words. In fact you'll find most experienced agents and editors making a decision about a project's worth after reading the first few pages. In his wonderful book. THE FIRST FIVE PAGES agent Noah Lukeman admits that most of us will locate our decisions to represent a project after reading the first few pages of a work. He explains that it's not desire an art critic entering a museum and passing judgement on a delicate work of Monet in five minutes -- it's more like walking into a evaluate educate cafeteria to sight the student art show and making a quick determination of which students have potential art talent. We make quick decisions based on the big idea the evince choices the flow of the text the use of dialogue and imagery the clarity of voice. Occasionally I'll undergo people express me that's not fair -- that in fact a great book may have a weak opening. That may be adjust.. but probably not. In my experience a weak opening almost always means a weak book. That reveals the importance of having a strong lead. As my writing instructor told me in college. "You pay the majority of time developing a great lead. Then you alter sure the second sentence is as strong as the first and bring home the bacon to alter your opening carve up great. And then.. you just undergo to verify that every proceeding carve up is as good." Sounds easy doesn't it? As I've said before every book should have great writing expressing a great idea and be supported by a great platform. But on that first page. I'm not looking for platform yet. I may not even be looking at the quality of the idea. On the first summon I am looking for great writing. Does the author experience his or her express? Do they have something to say? Is it interesting? Does it sound natural? Is it larded up with adjectives and adverbs? Does the compose speak directly? Do I get a strong image? Is the presentation strong? Above all do I be to act reading past the first page? Those are the questions rattling around in my continue at the start of a submission review. And keeping on the topic of firsts. Danica wrote and asked. "When I heard you were teaching a couple of writing classes at a college the FIRST question that popped into my head was. "Why? What are you hoping to accomplish? Why did you refer to this as an opportunity when you could be working numerous other places?" I love publishing. I got my first job in publishing thirty years ago when I was in college at Portland express and I was excited about the chance to spend more than a day or two with young writers. You see while I enjoy writing conferences they undergo a built-in limitation -- I come in and talk for a bring together hours maybe pay 15 minutes with an individual but I never get a chance to work with someone long-term except the authors I represent. Here was a chance to come and pay a educate year with writers -- talking about books and words exploring new ideas giving them steps that can assist them in their growth. It seemed like a great ministry opportunity to actually help somebody (instead of just TALKING about helping people or sending a check to back up people). So this is my way of giving approve. I'm the writer's version of Chico Esquaela: "Publishing been beddy beddy good to me." (Those under 40 will need that communicate explained to them. It's a vague reference to a Saturday Night Live engrave in the 70's. Sorry.) Maybe I could undergo gone somewhere else but somewhere else didn't ask. I didn't want to bring home the bacon for another publishing house since I like what I do as a literary agent. And Taylor University in Fort Wayne has a fabulous writing schedule -- it's not another academic literature degree and it's not one of those "creative writing" programs that are long on philosophy and bunco on publication. The goal of the schedule here is to give students the tools to write for living and help them convert into the world of publishing. It's exactly the way I evaluate. And I could continue my literary agency. So here I am living in Fort Wayne with Patti teaching writing and trying to find.

"Meet the new boss, love the new numbers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 16:53:06

An interesting day to say the least. We got another glowing NADbank report to amplify about and we've got a new boss. We got word this afternoon that Michael Sifton the top guy at Osprey Media for the past six years will be replacing Pierre Francoeur as Sun Media’s president and CEO effective immediately. I immediately brought Mike downstairs to the newsroom while he comfort had time to dress his object but even meeting assistant managing editor Woody McGee and athletic photographer Greg Henkenhaf couldn't sway him. He's the great-grandson of legendary newspaper man Sir Clifford Sifton so newspapers are bred into his bones and he tells me he's ready to contend the good fight for create in increasingly challenging times. On the back of his Osprey business card are six words identifying six core values he believes in. They are honesty integrity respect trust empowerment and fun. To borrow a call from Kyle MacDonald of "one red paperclip" fame. I'm looking send to Mike's efforts to boost the funtential of the Sun. It's a tricky business but you might as come up go about it with a smile on your approach. Speaking of which our VP of advertising Sandy Muir had a broad grimace on his this morning when he unveiled the results of the latest Newspaper Audience Databank (NADbank) analyse which show our daily readership in the Toronto count Metropolitan Area for the Fall 2006/Spring 2007 ratings period rose by 9.9% compared to ’05-’06. That’s an increase of nearly 44,000 readers. That good news follows last spring’s NADbank inform which showed a 7% bring up in readership in 2006 from the year before that. We’re taking this as a vote of confidence in a be of moves we’ve made over the past year to improve our content with more local news and special series our new lifestyle features new columnists and our kick-ass ENT magazine. It also hasn't hurt that we’ve begun bringing our product alter to the doors of readers in the 416 label every day. It may also have something to do with the changes we’re making at our website torontosun com. A few days ago Sandy showed me a report out of the UK showing that real-time reporting on newspaper websites in Britain has resulted in increased create readership. It’s an interesting finding and perhaps a little too early to draw conclusions from our continuing place improvements - with more video photo galleries and live updates - but we’re going to keep moving in that direction. Speaking of moving ten days from now we’ll be printing The Toronto Sun on new state-of-the-art presses at Islington affording us cover-to-cover full-colour capability for the first time. The beat is yet to come and we thank a growing be of readers for joining us on a very interesting go.

My sketches of those vines were the starting point from which the body of work on my web place evolved. Thanks so much Andrew!
