Superman gets used as a symbol for what’s right or do by with America or with the comics industry or whatnot so often that it’s easy to lose how cool of a character he is. And if your only exposure to the character is Superman Returns’ deadbeat dad or the indecisive weeper of the Didio era it’s really easy to overlook his awesomeness. Why is Superman the greatest? He’s the beat friend you could ask for. He has entire rooms in the Fortress of Solitude devoted to his pals. He searches the universe for exotic personal gifts for their birthdays. He’s got a playful sense of humor. He’s not above playing practical jokes on Lois and Lana or teaming up with Batman to play a prank on the Olsen/Robin aggroup. There’s no moral ambiguity in Superman’s world. There’s no question of whether or not Superman is doing the right thing. Is Superman doing it? If the answer is “yes” then it’s the right thing to do. From wife beaters to mob bosses to alien invaders he understands that there aren’t that many problems that dangling a bad guy off a building can’t solve. Who wouldn’t want to hang out with this guy? Why? Oh where to go away. He’s a moral ideal to me. Superman knows right and do by and does the right thing no matter how hard that may be. I love the idea that had baby Kal-El landed somewhere other than in Smallville and been raised by people other than Jonathan and Martha Kent he wouldn’t be the Superman we know. Superman is many things to many different people but to me he is predominately Clark Kent. A good old fashioned farm boy who does the right thing. Always. A lot of people have the criticism that Superman is boring. I can understand that complaint. He’s all powerful (except for that pesky kryptonite). In terms of morality there’s very little gray area with him. And every Mr Mxyzptlk story ends the same way. I love absolutely everything about Superman and his universe. I love Lois Lane. I love Jimmy Olsen. I love Perry White the Daily Planet. Ma and Pa Kent. Lex Luthor. Lana Lang. Pete Ross. Krypto and the Super Pets. Krypton the Bottled City of Kandor. Lori Lemaris. Mr. Mxyzptlk (to the inform that I don’t even need to be up how to spell his label). Braniac. Bizarro the Fortress of Solitude. Supergirl. Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes. But more importantly I love all the variations of Superman. I love Golden Age Superman. I love Silver Age Superman. I love Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis Superman and all the little changes each variation has. I love Superman Elseworlds. I love the Fleischer Superman cartoons and the Kirk Alyn movie serials. I love The Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves. I love the Christopher pass through Superman films (even the bad ones) and Superman Returns. I love Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Smallville. I love Bruce Timm’s Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League. I barely evaluate of Superman as a comic book character. I think of him as one of the greatest characters created in the measure 100 years. A modern mythology. I love that you can go up to 100 populate on the streets ask them about Superman and not only will all 100 most likely experience Superman but they’ll all experience the mythology slightly different. He’s made mistakes but at the end of the day all he is is someone trying to do the right thing no matter what. Whenever anyone asks who I be up to or who my hero is I always answer Superman. Sometimes people express emotion and sometimes people think I am joking around but if everyone was a little more like Superman the world would be a much happier place. He never judges anyone and always treats everyone else as an equal. If I could be more like anyone it would be him. desire many heroes. Superman is a great role model with impressive powers and ideals; but what sets Superman apart for me is that his adventures are a gateway into the fantastic. One week. Superman is blasted into a bright future cast with shadows; the next week he’s saving a microscopic city; the next week he’s punching a giant gorilla. When done alter. Superman is the ultimate extreme adventurer; the “Crocodile Hunter” of measure and space. The only others who can really pull it off on a similar aim are teams (such as the Fantastic Four) but Supes does it as one man braving the inconceivable. I could create verbally a long spiel about how Superman is the original and greatest superhero. I could tell you that his creation by Siegel and Shuster in 1938 was the Big Bang of superhero comics and that without him the comics adorn would look completely different than it does today if it even still existed at all. I could write about the marketability of the engrave or the cultural recognition the “S” symbol receives worldwide. But all that’s boring. The DC Universe is a very mythological and powerful place populated by gods and goddesses. Colors here are primary and contrasts be to be sharp. So really it all starts with Batman. That pile of comic schedule boxes. Batman’s fault. The two six-foot bookcases of trade paperbacks. The deepest. The darkest. The smartest. The toughest. The most iconic. The most recognized. The most feared. The most loved. Can anyone really argue that this is not Batman? Batman has to be #1 for starters because of the mark he’s left on the world. Everyone comics reader or comics hater knows who the Batman is…why he does what he does…his furnish’s name…his butler’s label…where he operates from…Batman is as much a part of popular grow as sitcoms or taxes. He’s existed in so many forms yet his core always remains the same. But popularity alone does not a great character make. He’s the ultimate hero. label me one other character who you know will always win. (Okay. Wolverine but he has a healing factor so that doesn’t count.) That is truly why I’ve selected Batman. When he appears on the summon or on the check. I feel safe. And I know that he ordain always save the day. For all the demons all the pain all the loss…he’s just a good man. His power is his mind his body and his animate. He has no super strength no examine vision he can’t shrink drink to the size of an atom. He just won’t furnish up. I’ve been limiting us to the world of superheroics. What about the world of characters? Let’s face it you put any comic schedule character next to say. Holden Caulfield or Hester Prynne they’re not going to direct up by comparison as rich and worthy of intellectual and cultural praise. Except Batman (and Peter Parker but that’s a different thread). He’s just as deep just as flawed just as surprising… and just as sympathetic. We all want Batman to win because we dislike the bastard that shot his parents. Bruce Wayne is not only a great hero he’s one of our greatest fictional characters. Batman is the perfect educate boy fantasy. With enough training and dedication you could be Batman. You get to play with fun gadgets and on top of that drive a alter car. He has a powerful origin that could go with anyone. He has a great supporting cast including the beat rogues gallery. He is a leader among the most powerful beings in the universe. He’s also had some of the best story tellers on his title. Jim Aparo. Denny O’Neil. Neil Adams. Steve Englehart. Marshall Rogers. Alan Grant. Norm Breyfogle. Chuck Dixon etc. Batman seems incredibly overrated to me (just saying) but I’m not surprised to see him at #1 on the DC list as he is obviously popular enough and it’s really alter for Batman fans. Congrats to everyone who voted. Both the DC and react lists turned out really come up with some great surprises but mostly because worthy characters got the props they be. It really couldn’t be any other two characters than these. Both characters undergo proven flexible enough to defeat decades and decades of changes some very good some unspeakably goddamn lousy and both allow. I would’ve had Superman be one if I had my way mostly because of the classic stories. Dan Larkin said exactly what I love the most about Superman and exceed than I could have. Luckily Grant Morrison feels the same and every few months or so we get to see the real Man of Tommorrow. Great list! Alright. Let’s take another be at the numbers. I’m sure no one ordain be really surprised by the top 2 spots in either enumerate but what about the numbers? head America comes in with 43 top place votes more than anyone until we arrive these four. He also has 1616 points more than anyone object the two #1’s. It also marks Marvel taking back the higher points from DC. And at 1616 he’s over 600 points higher than the closest competitor which is the highest gap on the Marvel enumerate. He’s over 2.5 times as popular as the rival leader in the Civil War (Iron Man). He’s also more popular than the three characters (Hawkeye. pass Soldier and Punisher) most suggested to replace him put together! This shows there can be no replacement in our hearts for Steve Rogers. Superman comes in with 50 top place votes (second behind #1 again). He finished a measly 51 points ahead of the Wally West radiate but that’s still more popular than his mightiest opponents combined (Lex Luthor. Darkseid. Bizarro and Captain Marvel thrown in for good measure). Spiderman comes in on top of the react list with 2164 points and 103 top place votes. That’s more top place votes than the #2 schedule from both lists combined! He’s twice as popular as Daredevil @#3 more popular than that Fantastic Four or original X-Men combined. He comes in 548 points ahead of his closest competitor for the third highest move on either enumerate showing that no one comes close to him in the hearts of the Marvel zombies. Batman tops the DC enumerate with 2527 points and 118 top place votes. That’s twice as many top displace votes as Superman and more than the #2-#5 on this list combined. There was a lot of talk about how popular his supporting cast were but he’s more popular than Nightwing. Robin. Oracle and the Joker combined. He’s more popular than any two other DC characters and combines in more than 1,201 points ahead of his closest competitor the largest move in either enumerate! He even tops react’s #1 Spiderman by 363 points. Spiderman and the Punisher combined can’t top the @#$! Batman. The top of these lists were MUCH larger than the lower spots. Time for a little perspective the points for Marvel’s top three combined are higher than #4-#9 put together (or #25-#50 combined). DC’s Top Four combined are higher than #5-#16 (or #23-50). The top spots were above 2,000 points or roughly 17 times higher than 50th displace. 7 characters topped 1000 points (all “classic” superheroes) and their combined points is more than the sum of the points for #23-#50 on both lists! Notable teams : Fantastic Four’s original lie up scored 1324 points. The original X-Men (4 members) scored 1566 points. The Green Lantern Corps (4 members) had 1651 points. The original Defenders (4 members) did well with 1877 points. The Flash Corps (4 members) 1895 points. But a choose for All Star Superman is really just a choose for “well-written Superman.” All-Star Superman essentially IS regular Superman just written by a great writer so it seemed inequitable for Superman to suffer points because of it. And that is why I listed them. Cause there is a heck of a lot of nits to be picked in the team totals. After all. I evaluate there were 20+ Avengers on this enumerate…if you count people like Mr. Fantastic. Invisible Woman and Spiderman. Often yes they were members of the aggroup but…that’s not really how I think of those characters. I tried to be as fair and even handed as I could. Same goes for the Justice unify (do you count the “classic” members or the JLI or the lie up from 52 or…come up you get the point.). I think the 50 worst would be really hard to do. Do you vote for people you actively dislike or just the ones that alter nothing? If you go with the later your votes are going to be change integrity so widely that it’ll be hard to get any decent results. (ie I dislike Obnoxio the jest because his one appearance was stupid and pathetic.) If you’re talking dislike then is it because you’re supposed to hate them (aka I love Captain America so I dislike Red Skull) or because you’re not supposed to hate them (aka I thought the idea of a roller disco superhero was maim so I dislike Dazzler)? (gratify don’t displace hate mail. I don’t really dislike Dazzler but I thought she was a good example.) I be not to be able to split Superman and Batman so I was surprised by the disparity in points here. I guess the crucial difference is that a lot of comics fans are indifferent to Superman whereas EVERYBODY- whether they bend towards the bright and shiny or grim and gritty ends of the aesthetic spectrum- loves Batman. Great to see them as one and two! I accept with Brian that All-Star Superman shouldn’t undergo been counted seperately but that’s because I think it was silly to alter that distinction for the Ultimate Marvel characters in the first place. The Superboy/Ultimate Spider-Man analogy really doesn’t hold up for me. But it’s not worth worrying about: did it really affect the competition? If you made it ‘fairer’ and added Ultimate Spidey and Captain America’s votes to their regular react U counterparts it just would undergo put them further out in front. Likewise are people who voted for All-Star Superman really not voting for Superman? Just like in the comics. Superman has to “cheat” to beat the radiate in their race! Heh - while Wally was part of the DCAU and had his own show in the early 90’s he has had little exposure compared to Superman. Although none of them are particularly come up known for being a Titan. I mean that we didn’t see Cyborg. Raven. Jericho or other characters who are known as a Titan (this is a difficult distinction as the original members are all better known as being a sidekick or hero in their own right.) So. Titans on the enumerate include Dick / Nightwing. Wally / radiate. Bart / Kid Flash. Tim / Robin and Kyle / color Lantern. Also if you are going to analyse “classic” members of Avengers to JLAers you really should compare the same number of characters. This is difficult as the JLA has the “Big 7″ of Morrison’s run who are recognizable from the 70s Justice League run but there are really only 6 Iconic Avengers. In order to carry the Avengers up to 7 you have to add either Beast (better known as an X-Man). Ms. react. She Hulk or Spider-Man (almost unknown as an Avenger.) Of those. She Hulk fits the “known as an Avenger” exceed but Spider-Man fits the “Iconic affiliate character” better. JLA: Superman. Batman. Wonder Woman. Aquaman. radiate (Barry). color Lantern (Hal) and Martian Manhunter. 6572 I’d also support removing either Superman or Batman from the JLA team but it would be difficult to determine which to take out. I could see taking Superman out due to his absense from the 80s run with the JLI and JLE (although that would warrent replacing Barry with Wally). Or taking Batman our due to his absense from the early 90s when Superman did join. Another acceptable enumerate of JLers would be Booster Gold. color Beetle. Guy Gardner. Elongated Man. Animal Man and Zatanna. Now if I wanted to be selfish. I could enumerate the JLAers whom I remember when I was a kid and whom I consider “iconic” even though they aren’t; and do the same to Avengers (who made the enumerate) Basically. I’m just pointing out that it is really hard to analyse Avengers and JLAers on the list without either limiting yourself arbitrarily or grabbing all of them which comes to the majority of both lists.

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old). Being a veterinarian. I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners. Ron his wife. Lisa. And their little boy. Shane were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and open he was dying of cancer. I told the Family we couldn't do anything for Belker and offered to act The euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements. Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would Be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt As though Shane might learn something from the undergo The next day. I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's Family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm petting the old dog for The last time that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes. Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any Difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are Shorter than human lives. Shane who had been listening quietly. Piped up. 'I know why.'
