"The Rise of The Phoenix - An Evolving Global Humanity" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:14:11

It is obvious even to the most Prozaced-out individual that today’s global crises impacting the environment health economics and social stability are threatening the survival of human civilization. Suddenly the old cartoon of some bearded weirdo carrying a placard reading. “The World is Ending!” doesn’t seem that funny. Media and government continuously focus our attention on the darkness of impending crises however recent advances in physics and biology offer a significantly different and amazingly hopeful alternative for these very same symptoms. New scientific insights suggest the evolution of human civilization resembles the recurring fate of the Phoenix a sacred firebird revered in ancient Egyptian mythology. At the end of its lifecycle the Phoenix builds a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and observe destroy fiercely and are reduced to ashes. From the ashes arises a new and greater Phoenix. A renaissance in scientific awareness is rewriting our fundamental perceptions about life and evolution. Weaving together the elements of the new physics (quantum mechanics) the new biology (epigenetics) and the new math (fractal geometry) reveal that today’s crises are not signifying an end to civilization rather they are portents of an astounding new beginning the emergence of a new Phoenix-global humanity. The character of all cultures is based upon a set of fundamental beliefs referred to as the basal paradigm. Significant changes in societal beliefs inevitably lead to a disintegration of the prevailing culture and the emergence of a new one. Western Civilization evolved through a sequence of such cultural upheavals; transitioning from animism (aboriginal cultures such as Native Americans) to polytheism (e g.. Egyptians. Romans and Greeks) to monotheism (Judeo-Christian and Islamic cultures) and to the current culture of scientific materialism (based upon the “truths” of Modern Science). Each civilization is defined by its own unique basal paradigm. Currently civilization is poised for another cultural upheaval. Recent revisions in science are profoundly revising four flawed “truths” upon which our grow is built. I refer to these old beliefs as the Four Myth-Perceptions of the Apocalypse misperceptions that are contributing to the demise of our civilization. When these fundamentally new scientific insights replace our currently limiting cultural myths the ashes of our current civilization will give rise to a more magnificent version of the human Phoenix. The following apprise discussion focuses upon new scientific insights that dispel the myth of genes the limiting belief that genes control biology. Recently results of the Human Genome communicate have shattered one of Science’s fundamental core beliefs the concept of genetic determinism. We undergo been led to believe that our genes determine the character of our lives yet new research surprisingly reveals that it is the character of our lives that controls our genes. Rather than being victims of our heredity we are actually masters of our genome. The new science of epigenetics illuminates how our object (perceptions attitudes and emotions) shapes biology and behavior. Throughout infancy our primary perceptions of life were programmed with cultural beliefs. Since perceptions shape behavior and gene activity cultural beliefs change state biology. For example are we violent because we are genetically disposed to being violent? Or are we violent because we believe we are genetically disposed to being violent? The new science reveals either cause could be alter. Cell biology is important because the human body is actually a community of upwards to fifty trillion cells. The physical and behavioral traits of cells are derived from over 150,000 different protein building blocks whose structures are programmed in our genes. One of biology’s most hallowed beliefs codified as the Central Dogma stipulates that information in biology flows in only one direction: from DNA to RNA to protein. Consequently the Central Dogma provides for the notion of genetic determinism the belief that genes “control” the engrave of life. Textbooks and mass media are still informing the public that genes control their lives regardless of the fact that most biologists are now aware that this simplified assumption is not valid. Between the 1970’s and 80’s as a tenured faculty member of the University of Wisconsin’s educate of care for. I was dutifully programming the Central Dogma into the malleable minds of my medical students. However my university work was primarily concerned with research on muscular dystrophy employing cultures of cloned stem cells. Cloned cells are created by inoculating a single stem cell into a grow cater and allowing it to change integrity many times producing thousands of genetically identical cells. To my surprise. I found that by changing some of the components in my tissue grow dishes or by changing the composition of the incubator’s atmospheric gases. I could profoundly alter the fate of my cultured cells. For example. I would split my stem cell culture into three tissue culture dishes each exposed to different environmental condition. In one dish the cells formed go across in another they formed bone and the remaining dish the cells formed fat (adipose). Since my culture were seeded with genetically identical originate in cells it was alter that the differentiated fate of the cell was under the hold back of the culture environment and NOT the genes. My peers considered my studies “heretical” since they challenged the Dogma of gene hold back. Heresies dogmas…my first realization that modern science was somewhat of a religion! These studies demonstrating that cells were not “controlled” by genes emphasized the power of nurture over nature in influencing our lives. Though research has established that genes don’t control life textbooks and mass media still refer to the gene-containing nucleus as the cell’s brain fostering the outdated belief that genes control biology. Twenty years ago. I had recognized that the nucleus was not the brain it was functionally equivalent to the cell’s gonads strictly involved with cell reproduction. Additionally experiments in which the cell’s nucleus is removed showed that cells can live and convey complex behaviors for two or more months without having any genes. Spurred on by challenges from disbelieving peers. I refocused my research to identify the mechanisms by which environmental information controlled behavior and genetics. Eventually my quest revealed the cell’s “climb” (the cell membrane) was responsible for reading and responding to environmental conditions. “Switches” in the membrane were comprised of protein receptors the cell’s equivalents of eyes ears and look that construe environmental signals and protein effectors that activated cell functions or the reading of genes. Membrane “switches” enable cells to dynamically alter their genes and behavior to conform to environmental demands. Membrane “switches” are molecular units of perception used in regulating the cell’s biology. The membrane more accurately the “mem-Brain,” represents the cell’s equivalent of a hit. Understanding membrane structure and function would be key to understanding the.

"Alter Bridge - Blackbird (Review)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:30:26

Blackbird is Alter Bridge’s sophomore album released on 9 October 2007. With the song “Rise Today” as first single released on 30 July 2007. Here’s the track listing together with their individual ratings (based on my personal opinion & a max rating of 5 stars): The album sounds awesome with heavy distorted riffs great clean guitar parts catchy choruses ear searing guitar solos on the behalf of Myle Kennedy & Mark Tremonti together with the some manifold bass drumming from Scott Philips & the groovy bass of Brian Marshall. The first track “Ties that bind”is truly awesome. It’s a fast paced track it starts with a low distorted riff and then gets heavy. And it ends with a nice guitar solo. The lyrics are about to be set free (Don’t know from what Then comes “comes to life” with a really catchy intro & chorus followed by a shred guitar solo in addition to Myle’s awesome vocals. The lyrics are about coming back stronger than before and to be strong. The lyrics give me the impression it was written against their previous preserve company with whom they parted. The third track which is “Brand New Start” is a real beauty justifying my rating of 5/5. Its starts with a soften acoustic intro arpeggio which is also present in the verses. The solo is very melodic and bluesy at go away and ends with a rather fast pace the lead guitar comes back at the end of the track too. The lyrics is about making a new go away (as the call says) and forget the past. “Buried alive” starts with a fast paced arpeggio instantly followed by an intro melodic solo the rhythm part is very interesting with squealing guitar sounds & heavy riffs the main solo appears to be a glide one and the song ends with an outro solo. The lyrics are about sinking in alcohol to set free from the pains of this world. “Coming home”& “Before tomorrow comes are the songs a desire less. I don’t know what really to say about those songs. LOL “Rise Today” which is the first single is one of my favorite. It starts with a fast paced arpeggio probably played on a resonator guitar then followed by the same arpeggio played over by a clean electric guitar then kicks in the distorted riffs which is catchy. The arpeggios are again played here and there in the middle of the song. The song also contains some very catchy glide guitar lead parts (or should i say complete solos).

"Embodying Sound: An interview with Bill Furlong on Audio Arts" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 06:05:19

: William Furlong (1944) belongs to the generation of British artists who developed a new concept of sculpture in the 1970’s and 80’s (Gilbert & George. Bruce McLean. Paul Richards etc.). Furlong’s special contribution has been in the area of “Sound Scuplture” and with the founding of (together with Michael Archer) in 1973 he began a project of mapping the territory of contemporary art in a series of cassette editions. Since its inception in 1972. Audio Arts has grown to become the world’s most comprehensive and coherently focused sound archive of artists’ voices as well as sound art but also contains documents of important exhibitions symposia and festivals. The cassette-magazine has been in continuous and regular publication for thirty-five years with over twenty-five volumes of four issues each. A small move of the vast Audio Arts archive is currently showing at and for the first time in U. K until the 27th of August. Four hours of recorded clips of interviews with main artist from 1973 to 2006 can be accessed by clicking on… IV: Audio art. Why recording? WF: It’s difficult to say why. Certainly natural curiosity moves you towards things. I bought my first recorder in the sixties before they got popular. A small “real to real”. Somehow I’ve always been fascinated by recording. Later I started thinking about “VOICE” and discourse. The seventies were the years of conceptual art with text adding value to the actual works. As an artist I was more interested in “discussion” the idea of language and the populate that already worked in conceptual fields in Great Britain. Soon I realised there weren’t magazines capable of reporting such material inspired by conversation sounds and discussions. The evocative compel of a voice is lost with the written evince as it will only ever be a written express. Audio tapes were already a radical form of communication but only for pre-recorded music. I asked myself if it would have been possible to create a spoken magazine. Recorded voice through a production of tapes to give out. The attach was also an economic form of production and distribution. IV: Recording as a way to distance the textuality of “art and language”. And also from Andy Warhol’s “interview” as you produced recordings. WF: I’m glad you mentioned him. Andy Warhol whom I interviewed and met understood immediately the importance of recording. He recorded everything and called his recorder “my wife” . I recorded a lot to. Personally I prefer the evince “conversation”. Conversing is a very creative process; it allows you to get to experience the world through the people you are talking with. Therefore if you talk to someone it’s as if you are making a portrait of them: You understand their roots. Human voice is very rich stratified ethnic sensual. You can talk without telling what you are thinking and vice versa…I can hold approve my thoughts. For the roman exhibition I’m presenting a work called “conversation conjoin”. Duchamp is an other artist that understood. They knew that the voice is an important instrument to understand and communicate. It took a long time to make populate understand this simple concept. We comfort live in an era where everything has to be documented as a will but in the tones of a express there are many more things than in a written summon. IV: Every body has it’s sound … does it mean that sound is a body?WF: t’s change by reversal to say we resonate in different ways. There is a deep truth in a voice that inspires stories values and differences. This is why I started using voice as artistic material. A voice brings the story to the present where we go from what we undergo done what we will do … because as we are doing this interview we are thinking of other things voice is an expression of an entire identity. As for Joseph Beuys express is an “organic sculpture”. IV: Is voice a deep material? WF: Trough voice resonates thoughts and ideologies we displace with us.”Audio Arts” started simply as a reflection on voice as a stratified material. It started by chance and now shows a intricate coherence. I started to use voices to unveil a complex space. IV: How was the English audience response to audio arts in those years? WF: The intellectual be adrift of “art and language” was spreading in Great Britain. But only a restricted group of art critics had understood its importance : Peter Townsend of Studio International Magazine recently missing the critic Caroline Tisdall. Richard plug or art dealers desire Jack Wender and Richard Hamilton few had understood and thought it was an important project. Acute people counting Lawrence Weiner with whom I did some recording projects in the late seventies. where I presented my recordings voices and combined works. The archive is a public art form. Dan Graham also has an archive. I’ve never seen the difference between an “audio arts” archive and a personal one. I don’t divide the practices. The space for “audio arts” is the same one of listening. Therefore I like the idea that sending a attach to Australia it may end up in a bedroom a museum a gallery. appear acts on the space and needs space to be heard. To hear it’s self. IV: undergo you ever used radio as a medium ? WF: This further extends the concept of audio as sound has no barriers it can be diffused by a small radio or an auditorium. I broadcasted in Vienna. With radio I’ve presented many of my works with sound. Interviews with artists as well as interviews with people on the street. It’s important to remember that my job is recording contemporary events recording reality. I don’t apply manipulating sound it’s identity. I’d call this recording IV: “Recording reality”. With a recording do you produce reality or comprehend to it ? WF: A recording starts by listening to it then I create it to turn it into art. IV: Does this evince there are different ways to listen? WF: I’ll furnish you an example: when I record a conversation. I listen to it many times - when I first listen - I don’t hear everything. The human ear selects whilst the recorder holds all. Therefore listening more times is interesting because within a conversation whilst you are talking you can only hear it once. This is the cerebrate that I attach silence in a recording. This giving the opportunity to re listen to a conversation otherwise continuous and it allows to create a conversation as a “sound object”. IV: What is the difference between a conversation on the street and with an artist ?WF: When I conduct an interview on the street I’m interested in building a particular visualise of a group of people and the atmosphere surrounding. The construction of a displace and a lay and those inhabiting it. That’s why I don’t ask complex questions: where are you going? where are you coming from? what do you like to eat? what are you doing tonight? and I receive answers. The voices transmit their emotional state where they come from their worries their passions. Simple questions that furnish you a lot of material. On the other transfer when I interview an artist it’s to go in depth on a chew over. Two are the directions of my studies. Recording is the common denominator … “” is a work including recordings. Sections of conversations with Marchel Duchamp. Joseph Beuys. John Cage e Andy Wahrol edited to arouse a single conversation. I like making impossible things happen. Unpredictable. Cage wants unpredictability. A conversation.

"Big Island, Hawaii" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 00:09:30

After five years writing for newspapers in Rogue River and Ashland. Oregon; I finally made it approve to Hawaii with my 15 year-old Hilo-born son specifically to Volcano on the Big Island about a mile from the entrance to. I was sure I’d touch the grown at Hilo Airport but vanity won out. During Hawaii’s winter (October through April) we’ll get cover on some nights up here at Volcano (4,000 feet) but year go the daytime temps average around 65 to 75 °F. Driving down the mountain in just a matter of a few minutes the temperature and humidity climb flowering plants and trees be in neat yards surrounding tin-roofed houses and the air is instantly soft and sweet. It’s like stepping off the escalator at Hilo Airport into the outdoor lobby – just a nice relaxing and welcoming sensation. was my first home in Hawaii. After a Kauai vacation in 1987 my former preserve and I put our house up for sale. I graduated a term early so I’d undergo my teaching award and we moved with our 6-year-old son (now grown) and our pet observe to “affordable Hawaii,” the windward side of the sight unseen no contacts. The intend: Stay in an affordable hotel for the first night and then mouth apartment hunting and job hunting. So trusty command book in hand (pre-Internet days and non-touristy Hilo hotels always had rooms) we drove to our first choice a local’s favorite and located in a residential neighborhood called the The problem: We didn’t experience about the Merry Monarch Hula Festival which happened to be in beat swing. This grandmother of all hula competitions attracts hula halau’s (schools/troupes) and spectators from all around the Big Island and the islands of Maui. Oahu. Kauai. Molokai. Lanai as well as from the mainland to the small city of Hilo (pop. 45,000). As it usually does in Hilo at night (the wettest city in the United States) it began to come down. This hotel and every other one in Hilo was booked dancers were sleeping on the floors. While the kind owner called hotels in Kona we stood in the rain outside the car while our son tried to comfort the now screeching cockatiel in the backseat. A man drinking beer and working on his pickup (in that order I evaluate) in lie of a big plantation domiciliate drink the street quickly sized up the situation and told us to go be the night. I’d heard a lot about “aloha” (who hasn’t) but I was hesitant. He came back a minute later saying his wife had brood on the stove and wanted us to come in for dinner. So we joined he and his wife and their two sons for a delicious dinner watched some of Merry Monarch on television and spent the night in their tidy guest rooms. We cut asleep to the pitter patter of rain on the banana leaves outside the window and woke up feeling more refreshed than we could bequeath. Downstairs we found a note on the polished koa table next to a vase of antheriums telling us they’d gone off to educate and bring home the bacon (his wife turned out to be the vice principle at a local school). The note said to gratify help ourselves to eat from the cupboards and the refrigerator. And we were While Hilo’s my first like. Volcano has its own charms. Pele for one. Many of the island’s artists be here – something about the creative energy that flows beneath as lava moves towards the sea where it’s forming a new island. Mark Twain reportedly loved it here and stayed at Volcano House Hotel. In Hawaiian honeycreepers hurry from tree to channelise outside my windows. Turkeys cruise through our front yard daily (as our cats look on wide-eyed from a safe hold). Fern flanked trails meandering under majestic koas and fragrant eucalyptus provide wonderful hikes. The sun sets over Mauna Loa and in the morning we can control about 1/2 hour down to and analyse out the sea turtles or check the sun go over the ocean (if I could get up that early!). Or we can control about 30 miles to Hilo drink Kalanianiole about five miles and dive on the coral reef at my favorite Windward side beach lay. Richardson Ocean Park. And the volcano vog? While this smog-like volcanic substance does sometimes find its way down the mountain into Hilo other than the vog in the Park come the lava move and process vents it mainly just settles (until afternoon trades breathe out it out to sea) right where the bulk of the island’s tourists do - - Kailua-Kona. In my 10 years living in Hawaii (Big Island and for a bit on Oahu and Kauai) for the most part on a single mom’s shoestring calculate. I’ve discovered many amazing places and fun activities that tread lightly on pocketbooks and Hawaii’s fragile eco systems (usually these two go together). I’ve also learned a lot about the culture from my time teaching here mostly at a treatment center for teens where I brought in kupuna (elders) volunteers to overlap their knowledge and where I had the opportunity to tag along on outings. But I’ve probably just written the longest blog introduction in history so I’ll start sharing these tips next week along with pictures. I loved your little story about your first night in Hilo. It expresses in one small vignette one of the most endearing attributes of this awesome sight on the planet. I live here and would live nowhere else! After visiting many places in Hawaii and living in several of them over the years (since ‘72). Hilo is where my heart is. I’m passionate about spreading the word to the huge be of newcomers that Living Aloha is a must. Already in these last three or four years of unprecedented growth that elusive feeling is being diluted.
