"Cisco's second-in-command steps down" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-14 04:49:35

Charles Giancarlo executive vice president and chief development officer will be stepping down from his post as of December 31 after 14 years with Cisco. Giancarlo. 50 has taken a job as managing director and partner at an investment firm focused on large-scale investments in technology. His first day at the new job will be January 2. 2008. Cisco's CEO John Chambers said he had tried over the past six months to persuade Giancarlo to stay. He also said Giancarlo would always be a part of Cisco's extended family. "Charlie is one of the few leaders that I lost and it wasn't the right time to lose him," he said. "Sometimes because of their expertise or certain skill sets it's the right time for people to do something else. But that wasn't the case with Charlie. We will miss him." For Giancarlo the decision to leave Cisco came down to timing. He. But as Chambers indicated earlier this year he doesn't plan to leave the CEO job for another five years. Giancarlo who turned 50 this year said he did the math and decided it was time for him to leave and do something else. "I went home to my wife one day and told her that I fully realized what is meant by a biological clock," he said. Giancarlo said it was a difficult decision he had been mulling over for about six months. "I probably took longer than I should have to make the decision," Giancarlo said. "But it's a difficult family to leave." "It has been a continuous pleasure for me to work at Cisco," he added. "Not a year has gone by that wasn't just a wonderful time in my life." Giancarlo is the second potential CEO successor to leave this year. In February. Mike Volpi former senior vice president and general manager of the Routing and Service Provider Technology Group also. He now. But Chambers said the company still has a deep bench of potential candidates to take the top spot when he eventually retires. And Giancarlo agreed. "I see a number of candidates," Giancarlo said. "There are some interesting young turks coming up who will be great candidates a few years down the line." Some of these candidates could come from the new development council that Cisco has created to help guide the company's future strategy. The council which was announced earlier this month and was chaired by Giancarlo reflects Cisco's move to a more collaborative leadership style that should help the company more effectively address market trends. The idea is that a group rather than a few top executives will be able to be more agile in charting the company's future. Some of the leaders in this group include Kathy Hill senior vice president for the Access Networking and Services Group; Ned Hooper senior vice president of the Consumer and Small Business Group; Jayshree Ullal senior vice president of the Data Center. Switching and Services Group; Don Proctor senior vice president of the Software Group; Tony Bates who heads up the Service Provider Technology Group; Marthin DeBeer who is in charge of the Emerging Technologies Group; and Senior Vice President Pankaj Patel. Chambers also said the company will not fill Giancarlo's chief development officer position and instead will rely on the development council to handle Cisco's strategy planning. Hi,Quite a big subject here i know but yeah i have this load on my shoulder and i somehow need some advice. Seven months ago. I joined a former collegue on his business along with his partners and bring home the bacon for him as a web designer. One and a half months pass i found out that he is freelancing. Sometimes he puts some projects for the company but still with some kickbacks. So salaries had been delayed and unpaid. His partners decided to impel him out. They offered me to be a partner instead since they dont know much of the internet business. They said it still not going to be in cover since transfer of shares ordain take a year. I didnt object since i undergo no money invested anyway other than the unpaid salary.(Sorry the personal loans and credit cards ordain pop up very soon in this long story gratify be patient )I was quite excited that time since i undergo always wanted to be in a business. I was quite hesitant to evaluate it since i undergo some debts to pay regularly but still i took the offer. I was told that we ordain be working for the affiliate and not for the salary anymore the main investor told me. He is quite a nice guy since he was not expecting some big money to go in yet but told us that we be to support ourselves. It was a roller coaster ride since then. A few projects came but not enough to support us so til now im getting financial give from my fiance which is quite awkward and i feel guilty. I experience in my heart that the business ordain choose up very soon. We have just made some good alliance with some people although it comfort not sealed yet but its going there. The banks have been a very consistent caller nowadays since i undergo some 2 months overdues on CC's and loans and interests plus late payment fees and over limit fees are all blooming. Legal actions are a constant evince from them. Somehow im getting immuned but now i be this to end without quitting the business. Should i be now for a job? I was thinking of loaning money again from the tip to stop the bleeding temporarily but friends undergo told me its going to be a suicide. My other partner is also a nice guy. He is very talented and the latest bring home the bacon we undergo done from a very small budget is such a big hit. The client loves it. We are diverting now in video production which is more fun and exciting. That is my partners expertise and what i do is get some clients and do websites. Whats keeping me here til now is that populate i undergo met loves our bring home the bacon and promised that theyll back up out. What ordain you guys do if you're in my situation? Hi paeng,I have a few questions and if you could answer them it would give myself and others a lot of insight about your situation:How well do you believe your colleagues? Do they have your beat interests in mind?Is there any way you can cut costs advance? Is there a way you can prove to the banks that you ordain have consistent cash flow? Do you have promises of purchases from clients and contracts to prove it?Look at the situation from the tip's perspective. Is there anything you can do to prove to the tip that you will increase your revenue in the very near future? This bind may also be helpful: From what I construe here you've got one out of four going for you; that is the zeal and "blast in the belly" and it's alter that you like what you do. That said it's not enough. Yes you undergo to enjoy your work but you can't locate financial decisions on things desire. "I experience in my heart that the business will pick up very soon" and "He is quite a nice guy" and "My other partner is also a nice guy" and "populate i have met loves our bring home the bacon and promised that theyll back up out."So here's some practical rubber-hit-the-road advice in order of importance: Talk to your banker. express them exactly what you've told us. Contrary to popular belief bankers are actually human (well most of them anyway) and if they can alter arrangements to help you get over this hump they probably ordain; I'm sure your colleagues are all very good people and nice and whatnot. So they won't mind it at all if you have a be at their business plan so you can see for yourself what their plans are for the future and how well their previous projections have stacked up against reality; If they refuse to show you either the business plan or the fit pelt then my suggestion would be to cut your losses and move on. That doesn't make them bad populate and it doesn't make them the enemy it just means that you're not in a position right now to.
