Budget brands like Vizio are serving up for around $1,500. But lo and behold. Philips has a deal running at its on a few 50-inchers the lowest priced at $949.99 when you apply the $150 instant rebate coupon code. Impressively shipping is only $29.99.
But there's a catch (isn't there always a catch on great deal?). The plasma models Philips is selling are refurbished units. Also--and not surprisingly--they're last year's models. Philips lists the eligible models as:
Amazon is selling a new 50PF7321D/37B for $350 more. The question is would you take a chance on a refurb unit--or is a semi-used TV just a bad idea? Thoughts?
P. S. While we didn't review any of these models we did review the in the 9431D line. It did OK.
I personally like refurbished equipment. My experience has been that they are as good as new or better. Basically mass produced items spit out a lemon now and again. The are gone over with a fine tooth comb (hopefully) and any defects replaced. It is better than getting a new system where you have to go through the warranty process or returning as this part has been done for you? Need an upgraded PC for cheap go to the big name sites and check out refurbs for hundreds off the new price.
I bought a refurbished Philips 50" Plasma several months ago and had a DISASTROUS experience! The set finally arrived and wouldn't work right out of the box. Had to go through a lengthy process where local repairman had a go at it. Finally resolved that it needed a completely new screen. Second TV arrives and it looked they'd dragged it behind the truck the entire way: Scratches everwhere with one place that looked like the plastic frame around the Tube had been melted with a lighter or something. The buttons on the side of the TV--the essential tuning/volume buttons--had been rubbed up against a wall and were half-falling out of the set. Philips put me through hell trying to resolve the situation. I paid for the set in April and still had nothing to show for it in July. Finally after several irritating phone calls they gave me a refund. Don't fall for this price--you're better off saving a bit more and going to Costco...
Those people lucky to live in Orange County California can get refurbished Vizio units. It is also good since most repairs require them to send it back to the same outlet even though the factory is in China.
