"Philips blowing out 50-inch plasmas for less than a grand" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-14 04:42:22

Budget brands like Vizio are serving up for around $1,500. But lo and behold. Philips has a deal running at its on a few 50-inchers the lowest priced at $949.99 when you apply the $150 instant rebate coupon code. Impressively shipping is only $29.99. But there's a catch (isn't there always a catch on great deal?). The plasma models Philips is selling are refurbished units. Also--and not surprisingly--they're last year's models. Philips lists the eligible models as: Amazon is selling a new 50PF7321D/37B for $350 more. The question is would you take a chance on a refurb unit--or is a semi-used TV just a bad idea? Thoughts? P. S. While we didn't review any of these models we did review the in the 9431D line. It did OK. I personally like refurbished equipment. My experience has been that they are as good as new or better. Basically mass produced items spit out a lemon now and again. The are gone over with a fine tooth comb (hopefully) and any defects replaced. It is better than getting a new system where you have to go through the warranty process or returning as this part has been done for you? Need an upgraded PC for cheap go to the big name sites and check out refurbs for hundreds off the new price. I bought a refurbished Philips 50" Plasma several months ago and had a DISASTROUS experience! The set finally arrived and wouldn't work right out of the box. Had to go through a lengthy process where local repairman had a go at it. Finally resolved that it needed a completely new screen. Second TV arrives and it looked they'd dragged it behind the truck the entire way: Scratches everwhere with one place that looked like the plastic frame around the Tube had been melted with a lighter or something. The buttons on the side of the TV--the essential tuning/volume buttons--had been rubbed up against a wall and were half-falling out of the set. Philips put me through hell trying to resolve the situation. I paid for the set in April and still had nothing to show for it in July. Finally after several irritating phone calls they gave me a refund. Don't fall for this price--you're better off saving a bit more and going to Costco... Those people lucky to live in Orange County California can get refurbished Vizio units. It is also good since most repairs require them to send it back to the same outlet even though the factory is in China. "Pre-Budget Report - Darling doubles IHT threshold" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:28:49

Chancellor Darling has doubled for married couples and those in civil partnerships to £600,000 immediately rising to £700,000 from 2010. Darling said his proposals would mean that 97% of estates would be exempt. Although IHT reform had been trailed by the Tories before their Party Conference measure week. Darling didn't go as far as Tory plans to exempt estates worth up to £1 million. He also dismissed Tory plans to pay for the cut in IHT revenues with a £25,000 flat rate rush on "non domiciled" wealthy foreigners - arguing that the numbers didn't add up and would only raise £650 million instead of the £3.5 billion the Tories claimed. However he did affirm he would be bringing send his own measures to verify that "non doms" were made to "pay their bring together share" when it comes to taxes. Ian Maston director of inheritance tax at tax planners Chiltern noted that whilst the IHT changes were accept in that they ordain save couples the need to jump through hoops when planning their wills prudent populate ordain have already arranged their affairs to achieve this anyway. Hence the Chancellor's announcement won't deliver them a penny. "Pre-Budget Report - Alistair's first? Or Gordon's eleventh?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:01:41

Chancellor Alistair Darling's first or Gordon cook's eleventh (depending on how one looks at it) also made its earliest bow since it was first instituted back in 1997. It lasted a paltry 33 minutes. The backdrop to this year's report made for more political theatre than usual given Gordon Brown's late decision not to call a command Election. Brown by nature is a cautious man but with megalomaniacal tendencies. And so with two weekend opinion polls showing the Tories leading in key marginal seats - and of course having had to wait 13 years to act into the 'top job' - Brown's decision not to go to the country was a bit of a 'no-brainer' really. With election fever out of the way. Darling Gordon theoretically had the luxury of not having to worry about pulling too many rabbits out of the hat for the masses. However. (from £300K to 600K for married couples and those in civil partnerships) was simply too tempting - even if it happened to have been a Tory idea wheeled out only last week. True. Darling didn't go as far as the Tories (who wanted to raise the threshold to £1 million); but after factoring in his proposal to review the status of non-doms - populate who register abroad for tax purposes - and imposing rather than air travellers from 2009 - also Tory ideas - Shadow Chancellor. George Osborne could be forgiven for asking whether it was worth Darling showing up at all. UK plc meanwhile remains in (relatively) rude health - Darling forecasting economic growth to remain on track to hit 3% this year - in-line with cook's Budget forecast of 2¾ - 3¼%. The word 'relatively' means just that however as tougher times lie ahead - growth for 2008 being scaled back from 2½ - 3% to 2- 2½%. Forecast growth for 2009 is unchanged at 2½ - 3%. Our senior editor Robin Amlôt recommends you should consider taking independent financial advice before acting on any bind. gratify for help with your individual circumstances if any assistance is required.

"Flexible Cooking on the Road: ?One Recipe Fits All?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 22:18:11

A great way to save money on the road is by cooking for yourself in hostel kitchens. However cooking for yourself as a world traveler can often be a challenge in itself. Not every town in the world has an American-style super market where you can pick up all your favorite foods and ingredients from back home. Instead you’ll likely have to make due with what is locally available which sometimes isn’t much. For example a food staple throughout much of Africa is goat. But how the hell do you prepare goat? Good question! If you really like cooking or are an aspiring iron chef this can be a unique and fun contend. However if you are more like me and just want to put some food on the table as quickly and painlessly as possible. I recommend learning a few “one recipe fits all” food preparation strategies. A “one recipe fits all” is basically a simple recipe that you can alter to fit any food availability situation. My personal favorite “one recipe fits all” is Cajun Jambalaya. Cajun Jambalaya is a great recipe to carry with you on the road because it is extremely flexible. It can be made with virtually any write of meat as the Cajuns have traditionally prepared it with everything from crawfish to alligator meat. The only real requirements are that you consider onions celery and green peppers (though even these are flexible) a cajun alter mix (which I recommend you just bring from home - can be used on all sorts of undesirable food to mask the flavor) and rice (available pretty much anywhere). Some other advantages to Cajun Jambalaya is that it’s cooked in just one pot and that you can easily make as much or as little as you desire. Ingredients are extremely flexible and in most cases you just impel in whatever you have. The cajun alter mix does a great job homogenizing the flavor of the overall cater so even if you’re cooking with goat meat it still tastes desire normal jambalaya. Below is a simple and flexible recipe for Cajun Jambalaya that can be used pretty much anywhere in the world: Heat cooking oil in a large pot and add meat(s). Cook until cook. Add onions celery and color peppers and sautee until cook. Add any other vegetables as well as cajun spice mix and act to sautee until everything is cooked and cook. Add rice and chicken/vegetable stock (or water if have is unavailable). Cook without stirring until rice has been cooked. Most of the have/wet should be absorbed into the sieve so that the final dish is wet but not soupy. Haha thanks Mike. Unfortunately I didn’t take the picture it was taken by Benjamin Harrison from flickr. But I accept it does look good! The only beer we get down here in Ecuador is Pilsener (an Ecua-classic). Budweiser. Heineken and the occasional Corona. Basically the cliche beers plus one homegrown classic (which is nothing to write home about…) XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <label> <em> <i> <touch> <strong>
