Third Place Evolution

 <modified>2008-12-15T15:10+00:00

Hotel brand has taken this a go advance -- the hotel has rounded up and asked them to back up make the hotel experience as memorable as possible. The includes a mix of painters and photographers musicians and designers chefs and architects - including two of my personal favorites: coffee impresario and visionary chef.
Anyway to celebrate the my colleagues at have created a new that enables fans of the Le Meridien experience to connect with fellow innovators: "Guests of Le Méridien are not tourists. They are travelers. They are adventurers in the world of ideas. Le Méridien is to inspire our Guests to discover more than just a new destination. They discover a new way of seeing things."
Hotels are very interesting creatures and their evolution quite fascinating. First off their evolution over the past decade or so has put them in my eyes at the forefront of experience-creation. (The retail experience - blending art architecture and neighborhood - what Harvey Molotch calls "displace in product" - is also fast evolving as Airoots points out. ). I like to be in a wide range of types of hotels and increasingly to be clear of the loud boutique-club hotel variety. We visited the Parker - a Meridien propety in Palm Springs last year - and the public spaces lobby and restaurant were very well done; we certainly did not feel like tourists. My personal favorite these days is New York's Gramercy lay. Ian Schrager likes to say he isn't a hotel developer he's a social scientist - a statement which is interesting if nothing else. The choice of art is exqusite and the use of industrial design fixtures - like expose lighten bulbs inspired. This is all to say the ante has been upped.
At a deeper level hotels and some airline lounges provide a possible glimpse into the future of third places. When city leaders real estate developers and others ask me what they should "add" to their projects. I say a truly inspired third place (home is the first place work the second cafes bars and so on third places). Now I like Starbucks just fine but as a third place goes it's pretty low on the evolutionary scale. What most populate need are third places that are geared up for bring home the bacon. The closest approximation. I can find is a truly great hotel beg or perhaps an airline sit. I was literally blown away by the Quantas Lounge in Sydney for its combination of quiet interaction great food and coffee (and wine) and truly inspired design.
It's more than a customer undergo it's enabling the human being to be inspired and interact and bring home the bacon as seamlessly and productively as possible. Some hotels and airline lounges are beginning to climb this evolutionary ladder - to act third places that try to do this. My two cents says that bring home the bacon is at the very core of this: not just coffee or drinks a great restaurant or nightspot a great place to interact and bring home the bacon. Seems to me we need to evolve from the current emphasis on great aesthetics and reasonable functionality to great aesthetics and great functionality. Not just in hotel lobbies but throughout our communities.
Very interesting post. Reminds me of a philosophy categorise I took a couple of years ago and our discussions over Robert Putnam's "Bowling Alone" and the decline of social capital. desire you said. Starbucks isn't bad it's just not great. It's not conducive to very good social interaction. I evaluate the Western world specifically the U. S. could definitely use more salon-type gathering spots.
That looks straightforward. Why am I continuously circling the challenge? A puppy with an reluctant turtle. Where can get a bite?
My trouble seems to have something to with creating these luxurious pockets of aestetic functionality while not only benefiting to their communities but making them universally accessible.
So far third places as in your examples are confined in some pretty rarified air. First Class Air Lounges. 5 star Hotels and the desire. While I'm sure I personally would be far more productive ergonomically propping an elbow on yards of baby speak soft leather couches surrounded by Jackson Pollock beg' coverered mezzanine walls. I'm not sure those environments will answer to provide the 'creative collection point' that so many communities need.
So I speculate I would see a system of 'creative collection points' organized in similar fashion to the public libraries; maybe crossbred with the parks and recreation enities. Just asking but is there a possibility that the public library system is heading the way of the dinosaur? Millions of community dollars are budgeted to develope and keep some of the most beautiful architecture in America. Is it time to morph these ambitions to recognise the real be for a more user friendly 'third space'.?
Because they ordain continue to change in importance the next generation of third places should begin to move away from commercial enities where their create by mental act and function are subject to market pressures. By making quality third spaces more inclusive future innovation ordain benefit from diversity..
Zuko - Exactly. I was (trying to) say that these are attempts at third places but you said it better "rarified" for sure. They're heavy on the aesthetics and sort of low to mid on the functionality. Worse yet as you say they're EXCLSUIVE or even EXCLUSIONARY. I like your idea of creative collection points. I'm trying to visualize what would be in them - what would they look and conclude desire. And somehow like you I end up circling the whole idea. But you're getting us closer.
I think more progressive library systems are already running with some of Zuko's ideas. The Toronto Public Library has been feverishly renovating branches with lots of emphasis on computers comfy chairs and rooms small and large for study groups and community meetings. Every renovated grow that re-opens sees a dramatically higher level of use which seems to be sustained past initial curiosity. Anyone in Toronto who hasn't been inside a library in the measure few years should check out the Beaches. Runnymede or St. James Town grow (the latter is co-located with a parks & rec displace) or the central Reference Library.
But I'm not going to claim they've got the problem solved -- I think libraries will continue to skew towards young and old clientele leaving plenty of unmet need for this kind of lay. Another possible solution is the shared workplace (the Centre for Social Innovation is a local example) but these tend to work best for organizations that are quite small. Maybe that's why middle-aged large-org workers jaunt so much -- it's the only way to go somewhere more inspiring than the conference room drink the hall!
What I'm interested in is the future of the second place the workplace. It is obvious that many populate who are independent professionals can't be fully productive in a home office and be an office away from home but also need something more work-oriented than existing 'third places' (and for that be. I've noticed many third-places are actively hostile toward people using them as a bring home the bacon environment).
One of the trends I am watching are 'co-working' spaces. Sometime in the next decade or so someone is going to try and create a co-working-space communicate/franchise/chain.
To create on Michael's comment. I do agree that there is a bright future for 'co-working space'. We are currently developing one in Dubai and for lack of a better term we refer to it as a creative class 'environment'. We give homes offices and amenties and our goal is to blur the boundary between 'first'. 'back up' and 'third' places to enable and empower creative knowledge workers seamlessly.
So we create create and bring home the bacon the property (apartments hotels dining offices landscape parking etc) and also provide ubiquitous 'third' displace spaces (lobbies cafes gardens etc) and services (concierge catering meeting printing etc) that are distributed throughout the 'environment' to compound creativity and knowledge transfer.
Hmph. Blurring (or convergence) can only go so far (hence my mention on the drawbacks of home offices). What you're doing sounds more like integration.
Bringing first second and third spaces into change state proximity and designing them to praise each other is certainly a worthy approach but however close you bring them together you do still be boundaries between them or they start to fail their primary purposes. The neighborhood shared printer does not belong in my kitchen or even in a shared kitchen.
Because in my vision these spaces are geared mostly toward the independent creative my imaginings have third spaces fully capable of substituting for the second - in both functionality and able maintain a respected amount of elan that would make collaboration with other parties/clients comfortable professionally. That would go to the "conclude' that would need to be cultivated by their design.
Richard. I already referenced the current beat say to that: co-working spaces (which are actually a fairly diverse set of experiments):
Right now these are in the 'private lending library for members' arrange. I imagine that a more geographically distributed version could go away out resembling member lounges at airports or perhaps peering agreements between spaces in different cities and perhaps expand from there.
Eventually. I create by mental act that philanthropists ordain enable some public co-working spaces somewhere similar to how the great public lending libraries got started and it ordain gradually move into the mainstream of expected public infrastructure.
Culinary Arts Career Salaries

You have to love what you do. That sage piece of advice works for any career you might choose. Thanks to the Food TV network and some of the new chef reality shows many have seen the hard work and sweat equity that one goes through to become a chef. The life of a chef isn't all glitz and glamour. Most chefs have done their time before reaching the top of their game. Of course most chef's will never become the next Emeril who by the way is rumored to make 9 million dollars a year. Of course he and several other top earning celebrity chefs owe some of their income to restaurants they own and also as in the case of Ina Garten to food products sold under their name. They design cookware write cookbooks and do live cooking demonstrations. While attending culinary arts school most students work part-time doing what are called externships. These externships help them gain invaluable experience in the industry. Externships also help as students get paid while they get real life work experience. A lot of culinary arts students are hired full time and given permanent employment after their schooling is completed by the restaurant or resort where they served their externships. These externships can be invaluable. Culinary arts schools also offer job placement support. They participate in job fairs have local and global job postings and offer placement assistance after graduation. Culinary arts schools will also help the student with preparing for interviews and sharpening up their resumes. The level of culinary education and the experience that a chef has will certainly affect the salary they will receive. An executive chef with a BA degree and many years of experience can make a salary up to $250,000 dollars a year. Most chefs have an average salary of $60,000 dollars a year. Personal chefs can make upwards of $50,000 dollars a year. They generally work 4-5 days per week and have a more normal 9-5 type job. Personal chefs do all the planning and cooking for meals. The meals are delivered and left with instructions on how to re-heat. A personal chef can charge per meal or can be hired by one individual or family on a full time basis by Lee KellyAbout the Author:To learn more about California Culinary Academy please visit http://www schoolguideusa com/culinary-arts-schools html
Diary of a Wannabe TV Chef - PT 7

 <modified>2008-01-16T02:00+00:00

This is the latest installment in a continuing series that documents my personal seek to change state the host of my own cooking show. Since this is a relatively new “go,” there are no vocational programs or community college courses to prepare me for it. From what I have seen the two most important elements in securing such a position are passion for food and plain old dumb luck. Born with a passion for food. I set out to make my own luck.
chefs needed for new gourmet market and cafe.” The new merchandise was being opened by Mobile’s top (i e only) celebrity chef. This was a fantastic opportunity. The concept of the new market was intriguing – locally grown organic produce seasonings and spices from around the world fine wines and imported beers and the most creative thing was frozen dinners made in house.
The other side of the building was an amazing hot bar and deli. The menu featured Southern staples desire ribs and fried catfish at the country bar. Panko encrusted halibut and bourbon braised beef tenderloin at the gourmet bar and fantastic sandwiches desire the Southern style BLT made with romaine apple wood smoked bacon and fried green tomatoes.
I began my career at the market working in the hot bar making whatever the executive chef or the owner decided we would alter that day. I preferred working on the gourmet bar because its menu changed everyday while the country bar never changed. The gourmet bar was where all of the action was. Sometimes these recipes were written down and were followed without derivation. Sometimes they were improvised on the spot desire a Myles Davis exclaim aviate. A jazz musician in another life I am drawn to improvisatory cooking. The gourmet bar often featured specials from the create guy or the fish monger therefore we kind of just looked at what we had and made something up from there. It was a blast. What made it exceed was that I was no longer poor.
There was a job that the executive chef and the owner had been looking to alter. This person would at first work in the cafe kitchen preparing casseroles and such for the freezer department at the market next door. Once the pass party and Mardi Gras roll seasons ended this person would then move to an off campus kitchen that they would run with a team of populate to mass create the frozen dinners and casseroles. We jokingly called this person the chef de casserole. We thought it was clever. Before too long my experience as a manager came to my new employer’s attention. Within six weeks of being hired I was being promoted. I would be the chef de casserole.
I worked through the holidays cracking out as many casseroles and frozen dinners as I could. The problem is that I was usually lucky to have four form feet to bring home the bacon with. The cramped kitchen was simply too small to get any real production done. Finally I was moved to the forbear kitchen that had been purchased to aide in Katrina relief meals. This kitchen was huge. A bank of convection ovens and three 100 gallon go kettles. There were no stoves yet so sautéeing was out of the question but I did learn how to roast my mirepoix and Creole trinity.
Before long I was given two production cooks and a dishwasher. I began setting up schedules for casserole production and teaching recipes to the new staff. Things were going well or so it seemed.
One Friday afternoon the culinary manager for the company stopped by to let me know that the accountant had said that we could no longer drop to keep my kitchen open. The market was doing okay but was not yet at a level to support the start up on my project. It had to be put on direct. Six weeks after having been promoted and just three months after being hired my entire cater myself included were laid off.
To alter matters worse I got laid off three days before my birthday. Happy birthday huh? It was a bad measure for the restaurant market in Mobile and I ended up taking a part measure job as a line cook for a national BBQ chain. It paid little and was easily the worst restaurant job of my life. I spent my hours there thinking of how I could get out of the place. I went through the paper religiously looking for exceed jobs.
A few things looked iinteresting: oyster shucker drink on the bayou a temp job with a caterer making box lunches and running the galley on an offshore oil rig in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico – during hurricane season. All of them sounded exceed than what I was doing but they were even worse paying.
Playing with the kids helped Heidi Klum lose the baby weight

According to our sister place gorgeous despite having to suffer the baby charge after giving birth to three kids. She looks amazing and I'm sure she has many mothers scratching their heads and wondering. "Just how did she do it... ?"Klum is insisting that it's all drink to her busy lifestyle -- when she's not run off her feet with bring home the bacon she's busy playing with the kids. In her own words:
"I have three children. That keeps you busy all the measure. I work and we do a lot of things that are active. We bring home the bacon in the tend. We jump on the trampoline. I just started playing tennis with my husband. We climb in the tree accommodate with the children. We go to the lay and cater the ducks. We are always mobile."
What do you evaluate? Is her perfect evaluate down to jumping on the trampoline and feeding ducks or is there something she's not fessing up to like having a big aggroup of personal trainers and chefs to rely on?
1. I am sure it is a combination of things. She probably doesn't undergo a back up to sit around with the kids and work.... She probably has a trainer she works out with but I bet she does that regularly anyway. Genetics might have a little bit to do with it too.

What is The Space?

 <modified>2007-09-07T21:08+00:00

Looking around the web place for the new private club and concierge service that's opened recently across 9th Street from the Washington Convention bear on you get the comprehend that its proprietors want you to evaluate it's a stuffy lounge space reserved for the wealthy -- there's the wedding invitation-style move fonts the vague descriptions of what exactly this displace is trying to be ("For those who love traveling living dreaming and discovering,") and the membership application that asks for credit separate details without anywhere disclosing what the fees might be. It's the web design equivalent of "if you undergo to ask.
The interior of The lay turns out not to be too pretentious (evaluate partially paint-stripped color ceilings nice comfy black and white couches unfinished floors and plenty of rose petals floating in water) but after a conversation and journey with managers and event planners Jodi Silis and Wilmot Mwandanda it would be easy to come away with the impression that their web place is having the desired effect. When asked about The lay's mysterious billing on the web they replied that they "kind of desire it that way."
So though it's hard to say what The Space definitely is here's at least a few things about it that are adjust:
>> The renovation of this old carriage accommodate undertaken by owner Karen Cox has been tastefully done. You could direct a small semi-formal wedding reception in the main dwell and undergo a casual consume on the comfortably appointed rather large cover be.
>> alter now. The Space is change state to the public but at a date uncertain in the future it ordain become change state only to dues paying members and their guests (up to three at a time).
>> Drinks are on the expensive align. A Maker's Mark on the rocks is $10. They also intend to answer small appetizers but no substantial food.
>> Memberships come with access to concierge services from Cox's company which offers services desire private chefs and personal shopping.
>> The Space offers wireless internet access and a few business meetings undergo been held there since it opened.
>> The entire venue can hold up to 150 populate.
>> Silis and Mwandanda say that they don't be The lay to be unapproachable and that anyone should feel remove to bear on.
But so many unanswered questions be. How much does the membership be? They won't say unless you're willing to alter out a membership application and go in for an converse. What kind of populate are they hoping ordain connect? Why all different kinds of people of course. And maybe they're sincere -- unexpected visitors to The Space are generally made to conclude quite accept and Silis and Mwandanda couldn't be nicer. But exactly what different kinds of populate are looking to connect a private unify that offers excellent connections and rates on personal chefs?
The Space is by no means D. C.'s only private club but it's one of the only ones that hasn't already been in existence for ages with a well-established membership locate that makes additions mostly by recommendations from existing members. Does belonging to a private bar and sit that hosts concierge services and special events at 9th and N Streets NW appeal to you? Are you curious enough about all the mystery to fill out an application?
Gads so we get to be forward to another exclusive and pretentious social club designed to hold D. C.'s rich and effete politicos and celebutards. Joy. Why is it that D. C keeps trying sooo hard to be like L. A or Manhattan?
If they're not going to actually furnish you any cover information about their policies or pricing why are you giving these douchebags any coverage at all? Doesn't seem desire much more than a bar with a membership policy to me they should just buy the Late Night Shots membership list and label it a day.
I've been. It's nice comfortable and the populate frequenting the place aren't the uptight populate that I find around the rest of this town. I truly evaluate they are trying to do something different and it's appreciated [at least from me]. And I'm considering applying. I'm an architect on a not-so great salary living in Anacostia. and really enjoyed the last several evenings I've spent there. Quite a diverse crowd: on the opening night I met a DJ a couple of artists a couple restaurant owners a owe negociate some neighborhood folk. etc try it. and if you desire it. stay awhile. the be outside is nice.
beat Disclosure: I am a friend of Wilmot Mwandanda and have been for years since his time at Soussi. And I've been to The lay about 3 times since it opened. I'm always amazing by the almost instantaneous contend by many DCist readers on anything that isn't "indie." Clearly the bind states that for now it is change state to non-paying members why don't you go drink there and analyse it out?! If you don't like it then feel remove to publish your at least now informed comments. Until then stop slating what you don't experience anything about. And no. I don't evaluate I'll be able to afford to be a member but you experience what at least I experience what I'm missing.
Isn't this the place that hosed the curator who put together the gallery show alter? He had to move it at the measure minute to the store am I remembering correctly? If that's the case. I'm not interested in patronizing them.
evince on the street is that memberships are $2500 a year. Don't know if that's adjust but I heard it from a bring together different folks. I've been to The Space and it's definitely cool.... like the rooftop be..... But I don't experience how many regular unpretentious types The lay can attract who can drop yearly dues like that! I certainly can't; and "concierge services" aren't enough to alter it worth it to me!
was originally supposed to be. I asked Silis about what happened and she wouldn't mention beyond that they had a disagreement with J. T. Kirkland who curated that show.
The lay has been open for some private events since November but only opened to the public in the create it's in now as a sit a few weeks ago.
Are you curious enough about all the mystery to alter out an application?
Not change surface remotely. Looks desire the draw bar from A Clockwork Orange.
I can't see this displace surviving. The city's "established" membership clubs (ie University unify. Cosmos unify etc) are all suffering and are struggling to recruit young members despite the fact that these clubs furnish much more (gyms networking) and many firms pay the membership dues for their employees. Young populate with or without money simply aren't in the business of "joining clubs" these days.
Besides for over $200 per month what exactly does this unify furnish? A private bar and terrace? A concierge service that provides less than what I can get for free from American Express?
If that's your thing go ahead and join but I wouldn't pay a year in go...
Soussi has the shittiest service of any place on 18th Street. Not so sure I'd want to pay $2,500/year to belong to a place with any connection to Soussi.
Wanna bet the lay ordain be closed for business within 5 months. It reminds me of when I lived in Hosuton re-create pretension to try to be alter. I can only create by mental act what kind of douchebags would join this kind of thing. My predicition is we'll see a few Hummers parked out lie. Yikes.
After reading the bind and the comments posted about The Space here is what I undergo concluded: 1. The Space will not mention on the be of membership 2. The Space will not comment on how to qualify for membership 3. The lay ordain not comment on the.
