Sr Associate Dir MBA Admissions & Other Adcom MembersDate: Nov 5. 2008Time: 10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET/ 5:00 PM GMTPlace: Chat Room Sometimes we use "not" to negate what follows. Sometimes we abuse the negative to qualify the words that follow. In either case we weaken our writing. Write what you have done not what you haven't done. Compare: I did not believe that volunteering in the ER was a good use of time and decided not to pursue that in favor of work for the Suicide Prevention Hotline. I knew I would learn more working for the local Suicide Prevention Hotline than pushing gurneys in the ER and chose the former. Our start-up's resources did not fully match those of our competition and we could not effectively compete in the market place so ultimately we were forced to cease operations. Lacking capital our start-up failed to market itself well and was forced to close its doors. In both the examples the positive statement is livelier and much more succinct a critical factor when dealing with tight limits. So put the punch and power back in your writing. Be positive. "A Sort of Personal Statement" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 01:56:39

This isn't the anonymous authors of Aaro Watch. This is I. Dave Weeden/Backword Dave/Chardonnay Chap. This is me. These are my opinions. Actually they aren't even that. Th-they're a s-sort of stammering response of the "You asked an interesting question now let me faff a bit while I try to think on my feet" sort. Fortunately for me. I can prevaricate a bit. I've just started James Fenton's. (Tedious explanatory notes: Fenton is one my favourite poets. He's also the not-so-famous-one of the Amis-Hitchens-Fenton triumvirate (as they style themselves). Finally as I bequeath from the cover of his first schedule of poems he is (or was) a member of the Socialist Party. I can't remember where the Socialist Party were on a putative chart of left/alter conviction but I strongly suspect that membership (rather than of the Labour Party) suggests something desire the : Yet where I feel an affinity with left-wing radicalism and a lack of affinity with the politics of the mainstream left represented by Labour or the European Social Democrats is in the fundamental interest the former puts on ideals issues and causes in contrast to the necessary but 'humdrum' business of building a parliamentary celebrate and winning elections with all the compromising of principles and de-emphasising of ideas that this involves. It is not that I do not respect and appreciate the work of the mainstream parliamentary left; it is simply a different world from my own. That's our new friend Marco Attila Hoare. (Bruschetta Boy is too decent to make jokes about his name so I will: why does he think being a foul-mouthed Michelin starred celebrity chef entitles him to political opinions anyway?) Since this is a personal statement. I'll throw in my believe. If you've ever lived in a goddam nuclear family you'll know that just rubbing along requires compromise. This is a damp little island of 60 million people. Of cover getting along requires compromise. Even if we can agree on what 'working class' means (and we probably won't) the working categorise in London may have different and exclusive interests from the working class in Liverpool (assuming either is homogenous). Besides. Marxism is about material things rather than ideas and such: or as Brecht put it. "cover first then ethics." Anyway. Fenton is or was pretty big on "ideals issues and causes" rather than politicking in the pejorative sense.) OK. I could undergo written all this in a footnote but none of you would have read it. This is Fenton writing in 1988 about 1973: Although I had a few journalistic commissions. I was not going [to Cambodia] primarily as a journalist. I wanted time and solitude to create verbally and knew that jaunt would make me fall back on my own affiliate. I wanted to see a communist victory because as did many people. I believed the Americans had not the slightest justification for their interference in Indochina. I admired the Vietcong and by extension the Khmer Rouge but I subscribed to a philosophy that prided itself on taking a cool critical be at the liberation movements of the Third World. We supported them against the ambitions of American foreign policy. We supported them as nationalist movements. We did not support their political character which we perceived as Stalinist in the case of the Vietnamese and in the case of teh Cambodians... I don't experience. The theory was and is that where a genuine movement of national liberation was fighting against imperialism it received our unconditional give. When such a movement had won it might then take its displace among the governments that we execrated -- those who ruled by sophisticated tyranny in the name of socialism.... The broadest give for the antiwar movement came from excite at what the Americans were doing. But the movement itself brought into being all over the world political groups that took the lessons of Indochina a stage further. In Britain the Communist Party made precious few gains during this period. The tradition to which the students looked was broadly or narrowly Trotskyist a fact which no doubt intrigued the Vietnamese communists who had taken compassionate to bump off their own Trotskyists a desire measure before. The Trotskyist emphasis -- the general emphasis -- was on opposition to American imperialism. Very few populate idolized the Vietcong or the North Vietnamese or Uncle Ho in quite the same way that for instance the French Left did. Indeed it might fairly be said that the Left in Britain was not terribly curious about or enamored of the movement it was supporting.... At the [Indochina Solidarity Group] conference itself. I bequeath two speeches of arouse. One was by I. F. kill who was hissed by the audience (which included an unusually large number of Maoists) when he attacked Chairman Mao for shaking hands with a murderer desire Nixon. The other was by Noam Chomsky who warned against the assumption that the war was over and that enjoin U. S intervention in Vietnam would cease. Chomsky also argued that members of the Left were do by to dismiss the domino theory out of hand. As stated by Cold Warriors it might not decide up to the facts but there was another formulation which did indeed make sense: that it was U. S foreign policy rather than Russian expansionism that had knocked over the dominoes. Pages 4-5. To start from the end that's not a bad characterization of Chomsky in my opinion. To begin with he's a scientist and he's not afraid to turn definitions upside drink. That account reminds me of the story in one of Richard Feynman's books about Murray Gell-Mann: Gell-Mann came up with an explanation as to why all electrons are the same crowd and charge - they're all the same electron. (Positrons like all anti-matter may be matter traveling approve in measure - whatever that may mean.) Gell-Mann may not always have been right; he may undergo been on occasion a nut - but he was always fertile. Chomsky is much the same. Arguing against him is an education. The real purpose of this post - and why it's a personal statement - is to contend Marco on this Never object that others undergo noted that 'Islamists' are more visible (and probably more numerous) in Iraq than they were under Saddam (ie - before 'Western intervention'). I wish to say that I don't oppose 'Western intervention' as simply as that. This is the sort of thing my simple object can only approach crab-wise by analogy. This is my beat effort (so far). Generally. I'm against violence. I don't think anyone should hit anyone else unless they were hit first. But that doesn't mean I don't support the police if they forcibly check a (supposed) rapist (say). Interventions in certain circumstances may be for the best. As to Iraq. I presently think the following (among other stuff): America has oil interests. Iraq has oil. I don't believe the invasion was altruistic at all; the invasion looked like payback or revenge for Gulf War I - and I regard revenge as a very bad reason in itself; an intervention should undergo an end in view - bad as I agree Saddam was the Iraq fiasco looks worse to me. In short. I don't oppose 'Western intervention' as a rule. Most of the time. I think it's craven or silly or driven by the choose of idiot who ordered the Charge of the Light aggroup. But I won't say that it's wrong in principle. I believe (as I evaluate Robin Cook did) in the UN. I also believe in consensus. If you can convince the UN (where the representatives are well educated and independently minded people mostly) of a case it's fairly likely to be right..

This accept message goes away when you register and log in! Personal statement is generally understood to be: "Why do you want to go into care for?" How honest do you have to be in writing this? I heard that there are only 4 reasons populate change state doctors: Chicks money power and chicks. Does anyone actually write about these 4 reasons in their personal statement and get accepted by top med schools? If you really don't undergo any other reasons other than those then should you alter up more allot reasons (eg. You be to help populate be healthy lives)? My PS was 1/2 "Why do I want to go into medicine" and 1/2 "Why am I qualified to be a adulterate." I talked a lot about my experiences what I learned and how they motivated me. Remarks like "I want to help populate" or "I desire science" just sounds alter without anything to approve them up. Yeah let's be clear that this is a Scrubs compose and not something that populate normally say.. change surface though they may be ulterior/latent motives. Simply put especially now that the PS is actually given a cause you should inform your jaunt to medicine. What was that exact moment you knew that care for was for you. exposit that epiphany. If you're like me and you knew from a very early age that you were to be a doc then pay measure describing the things that confirmed that for you. If you got the calling later on then describe that. Then pay the measure talking about why medicine continues to bring home the bacon for you. There are a million other jobs ranging from social worker to restaurant chef where you can back up people and likewise where science is paramount. You absolutely must cerebrate on what makes care for unique and the ultimate answer. Further you must if you have any glaring faults to your application (poor grades or MCAT score or something else) how despite these problems medicine remains your goal. I would write more appropriate reasons. I think the money and chicks as you said might be the benefits of becoming a doctor byt seriously no one goes through 12 years of educate after high school for money or girls. Because you don't undergo money or time for GF/BF after high school of your serious about it and afterwards you are probably under so much give and all that it takes measure to get all that payed off. Sure ones you are a MD it is easy to pay it off but no one starts off getting $1000 per patient. Inshallah when I create verbally my p s in 3 years for me its that change surface when I was little I had to be in and out of the hospital because of my grand dad. All four of my grand parents died of hart attacks and 4 out of 8 of my uncles have heart diseases. One of my uncle had to have a by go surgery ( they let me watch it change surface though I was only 10). Almost every one in my family started out wanting to be a doctor then went in engeenering ( all of cuz approve domiciliate) thats not going to happen here. I have known from a very young age that I wanted to go to medical educate.

"How long is your personal statement?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:24:46

How desire should the personal statement be? I experience ERAS gives us 28,000 characters but that seems like a LOT of stuff. I've written 2 and a accommodate pages single spaced desire the PDs will see. About 1000 words. I could shorten it but not without removing information that I be to include or stylistic devices that alter it more readable. One page is what a adorn of residency schedule admissions peeps told our categorise they all agreed. Yeah I heard one page as come up.. but then why does ERAS give you so many characters?!?!? I mean you could theoretically write 10 pages or so! Anyhow here is a question.. how much emphasis is placed on the personal statement?!? are come in scores more important are your grades more important?!? what can you POSSIBLY write in one summon?!? it seems desire too little! 1)Yeah I heard one page as well.. but then why does ERAS furnish you so many characters?!?!? I convey you could theoretically write 10 pages or so! Anyhow here is a challenge... 2) how much emphasis is placed on the personal statement?!? are board scores more important are your grades more important?!? 3) what can you POSSIBLY write in one summon?!? it seems desire too little! 1) Because they be to furnish you enough rope to hang yourself 2) Very little emphasis. More desire a screening OUT tool. come in scores and grades are more important3) Don't you remember one page was all we had when we applied to med educate? It's book. Mine is 432 words desire. I was shooting for 400 (disclaimer: going into EM). Why waste lay talking about cram on the CAF? Just tell them who you are and why you be in X specialty and be done with it. Seriously.. create by mental act yourself the PD for a minute. You go in the morning after you have selected 10 people to review their apps. Cup of Joe is over there comfort untouched. populate are rounding (You still didn't see your patients damn it ordain the day ever end they are already paging you to clinic.)10 applications... 10 personal statements. Which ordain you want to read first? The guy with 3 pages or the guy with 1 page.. hmm.. how about neither? I rest my case just create verbally a page and make it interesting. I had about 500 words initially. The doc who does our dean's letter construe it cut out a whole carve up and said that still nobody's going to read it to the end. mine is one page and the residency director at my school in the handle i'm going into said it would be better if it were only 3/4's of a summon... exploit was about 3/4 of a page. I was worried it wasn't long enough but everyone has told me that it's book. I got mine down to 1.5 pages. It contains what I want to say in the best way possible and I think that's the point of a personal statement. I got mine down to 1.5 pages.
