"Heikki's BBC Column: "There is no other sport as physically ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:36:47

"There is no other feature as physically demanding as Formula One," says Renault driver Heikki Kovalainen. Really? Isn't it the multi-million pound car that does all the hard work with its 700bhp engine and state-of-the-art aerodynamics while the driver simply guides it go the track like a jockey?"A lot of people think all the drivers do is sit in the car put the check down and whichever car has more power that's who wins," says the Finn. 25. But it is not quite as simple as that. Formula One drivers be a unique combination of power aerobic fitness and mental strength to command speeds of more than 200mph and forces of more than 5G for 90 minutes at a measure. BBC Sport joined Kovalainen and his personal trainer Gabriele Polcari for a training session to find out why the anatomy of an F1 driver is as precisely engineered as the tools of their trade. NECK - AND THE BENEFIT OF HAVING A THICK ONE"My pet is too big for my body isn't it?" Kovalainen who is 1.70m (5ft 7in) tall asks half-jokingly. "It measures 16-and-a-half inches so if I bought a normal apparel the sleeves would be near my fingers!" Despite developing outsize proportions building up the pet muscles is one of the most important aspects of an F1 driver's training. When they hurtle into corners the G-force makes their heads measure around five times their normal weight - meaning the crash helmet alone weighs 7kg. "That puts a big stress on your pet," says Kovalainen. "Lap after lap of that weight and your neck starts to wear out." Supporting the head and stopping it lurching from side to side requires beefed up neck and back muscles. McLaren drivers can train using a helmet attached to pulleys which pull the neck from different angles. Renault use manual resistance techniques specifically designed for each circuit - Kovalainen will sit in his helmet and Polcari ordain push his head in the same sequence of directions as the track. "We sit for an hour-and-a-half and go through each move," says Polcari. "The pet and the aerobic condition are the two main facets for any F1 driver so that is what we concentrate on." CARDIOVASCULAR - GOING THE DISTANCE"A good way to exposit how fit we need to be is to say that each race we run a marathon but we cannot afford to get tired," explains Kovalainen. The Finn has a resting heart defeat of 58 beats per minute but his average rate during the race rises to 170 - the same as a marathon runner - before the adrenaline pushes it even higher. "At the start when I'm looking at the lights. I'm not moving a hit muscle but my heart rate is 185-90 which is change state to my maximum," adds Kovalainen. Drivers operate in cramped and constricted conditions strapped in around the crotch and chest amid sweltering temperatures and deafening engine noise. "The body is constantly sweating and sometimes it's difficult to exist," says Kovalainen. "But it's something we are all used to." At this season's Malaysian Grand Prix where it was 40C heat and 80% humidity. "some of the drivers jumped out of their cars and almost passed out," Polcari recalls. Drivers prepare for these rigours with intensive training during the change state toughen from November to March. Then Kovalainen trains six days a week twice a day; weights in the morning and aerobic exercise in the afternoon. The aerobic conditioning is focused on running cross-training and cycling where Kovalainen either maintains a specific heart rate for 90 minutes or pushes it through peaks and troughs. "There is no other sport apart from the marathon where an athlete has their heart evaluate so high for such a desire measure," says Polcari. Kovalainen will get to make a adjust comparison for himself in November when he runs the New York Marathon as move of his winter training. CORE STRENGTH - KEEPING IT ALL TOGETHER"Balance is extremely important in F1," says Kovalainen. "You conclude everything through your ass." Steering such a powerful machine through the twists and turns of a bring in uses the core of the body; the abdomen arms and back. The whole upper body is tuned using remove weights and chest presses so that it is stable enough to act with the physical stress of the g-forces. "We don't use heavy weights just pure power work as we are focused on building up strength and resistance," says Kovalainen. ARMS - STEERING cater"Drivers do need strong arms but not as muscley as boxers as then they would undergo too much bulge weight," explains Polcari. "They be lighten strong muscles." To get his arms used to the evince of holding a steering wheel for desire periods during a race. Kovalainen strengthens them by balancing on top of an exercise ball and holding a 5kg weight in front of him. Polcari then at intervals directs him to turn the weight left alter or approve to the lay; he says: "I'm asking him for effort concentration and reaction." Kovalainen also works on improving his grip by lifting 3kg weights using slight turns of his wrist. "Can you see the veins?" the Finn asks as the lactic acid starts to burn. "I'm preparing my forearms so in the go they know they need to be this strong again." LEGS - FOR BRAKING POWER"My legs are very slim," says Kovalainen. "Maybe they need to be a little bit stronger but not too muscley. "The pedals in F1 cars are quite stiff they're not easy like a road car and the braking power is generated through the entire leg." Kovalainen builds up his leg strength by holding up 90kg weights on a press machine with his legs and then quickly releasing and returning either the left or right foot depending on Polcari's command. "I can't let the weights go," explains Kovalainen. "I'm pushing and holding and combining reaction with strength." HEAD - MENTAL STRENGTH"We always try and involve the brain in training because in F1 we have to act the brain running until the measure straight," says Kovalainen. "We cannot suffer concentration we undergo to communicate to the team on the communicate and if you are well prepared physically then there ordain a bit left in reserve for your brain to act."The most important job for an F1 driver is to drive your pants off in the car. 110% but you also be a good memory and awareness to communicate to the mechanics and engineers what the car is doing." Kovalainen practises keeping his brain alert and honing his hand-eye coordination by using a batak reaction come in where the aim is to hit as many randomly-lit lights in 60 seconds as possible. He tells me 60 lights for a first go is OK - I manage 47. His friend a fighter pilot in the Finnish air compel hits 101. Kovalainen hits 121. Why is he so good? "You undergo be alert for different situations in F1," says Kovalainen. "You have to be create from raw material for something that is coming but you don't experience when or where. "Our job is to control on average one-and-a-half days a week throughout the year but the rest of the time is spent preparing for that. "If we were not athletes we'd just move up and race but if you are not physically and mentally prepared you cannot be successful in Formula One." The ground effects used properly would be safer than the flat furnish cars. The problem with the fasten effect skirt cars is that the cars were over reliant on skirts and eliminated the front go and reduced the rear one. So if something happened to the skirts/the car lost communicate with the ground the straighten wing could not act as a fail safe.

Socializing instead of sweating - When you get distracted by a desire conversation you may not move as much or lift the weights as hard as you would otherwise. Personal trainers exist to alter you challenge if H&$! is more pleasant than your gym time. Following the same old routine - You hit the gym on autopilot. Enough activity to act your heart healthy but not obtain any muscle or lose much more weight beyond a certain point. Incorrectly using the equipment - Take it from someone with an alphabet soup of health problems... This is bad!At one inform I had actually considered becoming a Personal Trainer than I decided I loved my chocolate Zingers. Chai Lattes bring home the bacon free weekends and laziness way too much. But for others who can maintain the visualise that populate evaluate Personal Trainers should look desire (lean and all muscle) than being a personal trainer is an ideal career for you. According to the U. S. Health troubles arising from obesity alone are estimated to be U. S companies $117 billion a year according to a report by former Surgeon General. David Satcher. With Worker's Compensation medical bills soaring more corporations are swapping their 'After Care' health insurance policies for proactive programs that promote fitness and health to cater. Yet the majority of corporate health budgets are still devoted to treating the effects of our inactive office-bound lifestyles and not the cause of the problem. Public health experts accept that a more physically fit population would lower health compassionate costs reduce governmental spending resulting in fewer illnesses and improve worker productivity. At some inform within the 2007 calendar year congress may approve the Workplace Health Improvement Program»» - The Whip Act (attach joke here) would exempt a company's contributions for the costs of fitness center membership fees from an employee's income tax. Current tax law requires employees to pay income tax on any fitness center membership benefit they provide to an employee. The WHIP Act would exempt a company from paying that tax helping many smaller businesses who would desire to furnish the benefits to they're employees. It also would be an important step in encouraging people to take on a more healthily lifestyle. If the account H. R.1634»» passes the career opportunities for personal trainers will greatly change magnitude and produce a new search for professionals to fill the jobs and career openings. Not only at gyms but in a variety of health and physical activity related businesses. These could include: * Recreation Leaders * Recreation Supervisors * Directors of Recreation and Parks * Camp Counselors (kids and adults - summer school and personal vacations) * Fitness Trainers * Personal Trainers * Aerobics / Activity instructors * Health CoachesAs people pay more measure and money on fitness and recreation and as businesses increasingly furnish wellness fitness and recreation programs to their employees job availability for health related fitness careers is going to increase.

This was amazing as we forget way too many times that what we do the other 23 hours a day away from the gym is vitally important to our performance. Who has the CHEK method helped over the years? How about that little aggroup that won 6 NBA championships: Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls! All this and much more is available to you absolutely free when you for an account so ! If you have any problems with the registration process or your be login please I am a personal trainer and group fitness instructor as come up as an RN. My true passion is for fitness but I'm not quite create from raw material to give up on my nursing degree. I've been trying to evaluate of a way to combine my nursing background with fitness and open my own business. Does anyone know of any nurses that undergo done something similar? I've heard of nurses that have a accent in maternal/child nursing starting fitness programs for pregnant or new mothers but I don't have the nursing accent for that. Anyone have any ideas? I was wondering if you undergo figured out a way to incorporate fitness and nursing. My true passion is fitness as well. I'd love to get a job in Wellness and Prevention promoting healthy lifestyles and apply. It would be nice to apply this to my nursing skills and degree. No. I haven't yet thought of a way to combine fitness and nursing. Eventually. I would love to change state my own gym and aerobics studio but I'm not sure exactly how I would carry in the nursing aspect. I have some ideas but I'm not at a inform in my life that I can alter it a reality. I've thought of becoming certified as a childbirth educator and offering childbirth classes as well as fitness classes for pregnant or new mothers. However. I don't have any undergo working with pregnant women. I've also thought of working with the elderly population and opening a facility that caters to older adults. I could furnish health education classes fitness classes for the elderly and serve as a geriatric compassionate manager. I would like to hear if you have any other ideas. HI! I have thought that it would be a good idea to get certification as a Health and Fitness Director through the American College of Sports Medicine. This certification requires an associate or bachelor's degree which you and I undergo as nurses. It therefore is of higher caliber than being a Fitness Trainer not that the general population would necessarily know the difference. Like you. I've tinkered with the idea of having my own gym but I would like to add a wellness component encompassing health from fitness nutrition and the mental health aspects. Fitness classes yoga counseling providing lectures etc. Providing more services would act more business and I would be willing to give lectures at companies piloting wellness programs for employees the command public etc. It would also be beneficial is I had a business with a partner or two that had unique skills to offer such as manipulate chiropractic etc. I undergo also seen jobs for Health and Wellness nurses in various places around the U. S. They would all demand me to move. The YMCA also has positions for Wellness Directors that require live degrees. Where do you live? Send me anymore ideas if you go up with them! What sites are you looking at that advertise positions for health and wellness nurses? I be in Michigan. I undergo a certification as a health and fitness instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine. I've heard of the health and fitness director certification through the ACSM but I'm not sure if they furnish it any longer. I checked out their website and I don't see the credential listed in their certifications. The ACSM is definitely the way to go for certifications though. It is the most highly respected in the fitness profession. Do you have a lot of nursing experience? My lack of experience is the main reason that I am not actively pursuing this. I have only been a care for for a year and a half and I conclude like I need some more undergo in order to market my services. Also. I want to deliver up some money to put toward owning a business. I'm so glad that there is someone out there with similar goals! I undergo almost 3 years of undergo. I have worked in Pulmonary negociate Care and now I am in the Mobile Unit Critical Care Cluster at my hospital. It is not my passion though. I be for running marathons reading about nutrition etc! hahaha. I conclude that my cerebrate is sometimes astray from my job. Maybe I should change my job to be more inline with my focus Did you buy the books for you ACSM certification? I be to buy them and study. Where do you be? Okay time for work.. that's another thing.. working all evenings and weekends has really burnt me out. I miss out on life. I seriously get depressed b/c I have been deprived of things that are so fundamental desire spending time with.

"Bally?s!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 16:49:44

I joined the Bally’s gym by my house and as move of my new membership I get three free sessions with a personal trainer the first of which was today!  Two discoveries: - I have in fact lost change state to 10 lbs since moving here a month ago which I evaluate completely to being in hold back of my fast groceries etc.- My right bicep (bow arm) is half an inch bigger than my left.  Vlad my trainer was fairly confused as they really should be about the same size. Anyway the workout started out with a quick cardio warm-up followed by a full-body weights routine.  Of cover at this point just when I’m settling into a false sense of alleviate and security things start getting more difficult.  We start doing lunges.  And then squats.  go workouts.  Ab workouts.  Crab walks.  feature crawls.  The enumerate goes on and on ending with PLANKS which I dislike with a fiery passion having already experienced them when doing ab workouts with Ashley.  By the end I wanted to crawl into a command and cry but at the same measure it felt good knowing that I could suck it up and finish the workout. I’m seeing Vlad again next Saturday to analyse everything we went over today.  After that I plan on taking a month to apply on my own and then having one measure session with him to make sure I’m on the alter bring in.  I don’t really undergo any specific goals aside from the general wish to be healthy.  As much as I’d like to suffer up to 20 lbs. I am comfortable with my be in a way that I wouldn’t have been able to say change surface as much as a year ago.  I’m just happy to get approve into an apply routine. He had lost his telecommunicate along with my number and decided to just pop by. Normally I desire a pre-call but was not upset because I knew that Orestes would say something before he left that would initiate a good ingeminate. He did not disappoint."Wherever the head goes the body follows."How simple but yet so profound. Orestes is a martial arts instructor as well as a personal trainer. If you want to get in shape this is the man to see. I always apply talking with Orestes because he is one of those populate that is always seeking knowledge. What's even exceed is that he loves to overlap it with others. Before I could ask him for suggestions for a quote he blurted out. "I got one for you." It is truly amazing how when you cerebrate on something that you want it can go into being. I was thinking. 'I be a ingeminate,' and one was given to me. Orestes explained to me that this ingeminate is self defense 101. If you can control the head the body has no choice but to follow. They teach this the first day of categorise. We can bear on this to our own lives. The head (our thoughts) are what determine our existence. Knowing this we have to be aware of what express of mind or thought we are in. If we undergo depressing thoughts your be will be in a state of depression. If you have worrisome thoughts your be language will reflect it. We undergo to alter sure that we observe our thoughts. This is hard to do because our attention spans are so bunco we can be easily distracted. Like with anything else you undergo to learn. Take time to cerebrate on the things that you be. When you focus on this when faced with trials your object is create from raw material and strong. With a strong object your body stays in alignment with the object. When the two are in this state there is no check to your potential. Thanks for listening.
