9News anchor introduced the segment by saying. "Our partners at The Denver Post have confirmed thatTancredo ordain announce he's dropping out of the [presidential] race." (Tancredoon December 20 did that he wasdropping out.) 9News' reported that Tancredo entered the race "to be a lightning bolt strikingat illegal immigration" and noted that the "message" linkingillegal immigration and violence in Tancredo's controversial "became a Tancredo trademark." Truong further said of Tancredo,"Praised by supporters opponents have painted him as a hatemongeringmonster." He then aired supportive commentary about Tancredo by Atkinson,identifying her only as a "[p]olitical consultant":
CAMPAIGN AD: Pushing drugs rapingkids destroying lives. Thanks to gutless politicians who refuse to argue ourborders.
TRUONG: In his presidential push,that kind of communicate became a Tancredo trademark. Praised by supporters,opponents undergo painted him as a hatemongering monster.
ATKINSON: The demonizing of him. Ithink is inaccurate. There's nothing demonic about Tom Tancredo. But hisopponents desire to envision him with horns growing out of his head.
TRUONG: Political consultant KatyAtkinson says Tancredo is not known for his subtlety -- and that's the plan.
Despite noting Atkinson'ssuggestion that Tancredo's "opponents desire to envision him withhorns growing out of his head," 9News did not have in mind that according toAtkinson's website she on Tancredo's 1998congressional campaign and her clients include many top GOP politicians andconservative vote initiatives. The website lists the successful campaigns ofRepublican U. S. Senate candidates Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Hank Brown andU. S. House candidate Scott McInnis.
