You will miss the green and the woods and streams and the dust will fill your nose. But you'll be free and just like me an idiot. I suppose..( ). Email me at idiot ( put that circled "a" sign here ) kbarrett cotse net.. .. Comments made here become my property. My posts are my property. Accurate excerpts can be used for any blogger's non-profit purposes as long as they link back to me. If you want to use my content to make a buck you need to negotiate a price first.. Spam control: all comments will be closed after one week.. Don't expect fairness or unrestricted free speech here... I am paying for this bandwidth... I have decided to start commuting to work by bike.. not to save the environment but to burn off a load of fat. My current spare tire is forcing me into type 2 diabetes... I have it under control with pills but if I don't do something about the load of fat causing insulin resistance my pancreas will eventually shut down making my life just a touch too complicated. So.. bicycle commuting might help but... I am rather out of shape and hills and such would make it difficult to deal with the 13 mile ride just out of the blue. As I discovered once I took the bike out and tried a test run... I was completely out of shape and starting to crash into hypoglycemia a quarter of the way there.. doubleplusungood. At 48 volts a momentary switch for a throttle and on a 20" wheel it should be able give me enough of an assist on hills to make them into flats. I'll probably upgrade to LiPO4 batteries after the sealed lead-acid ones the kit comes with go south.. maybe 6 months from now. Digging around on a. I have been able to determine that I will still get enough exercise and be fast enough to commute.. in fact most of the folks doing this are bicycle commuters. A year from now. I might be down below size 40.. instead of size 32 the usual result when joining the spandex crowd. I can live with this. I expect the brown truck of happiness to deliver the kit this wednesday.. so I should have a product report to write shortly after that. If some spandex clad road bike warrior has a problem with this blatent heresy. I'll just smile and offer to run him down with my diesel Suburban instead if that would make him happier.... I test-rode a recumbant bike several years ago in Corvallis. They look clumsy but the one I rode was far more efficient at transferring the power in my legs to the wheel than a standard bicycle ever was. I was very impressed. With your electric drive for going up the hills it looks pretty promising. You will need fenders for the wheels and I hope your employer has a shower room. Does the electric drive kit let you do regenerative braking? Dkay:Yes I have fenders on it... I was born in Oregon. I also got a cargo rack so I would have a spot for the batteries. The motor assist should prevent the dripping spandex effect... I'll wear my street clothes and not worry about it. If it gets too bad. I'll just bring a change of underclothes and some deodorant. One of the other hub motor makers. Bionix offers regenerative braking.. but from what I have read it isn't all that useful for the expense. Except as an exercize device.. some loons have run contests to see how far they can get with the Bionix's electric brake full on.. no one has busted 100 yards yet. Honestly congratulations on making the first step toward improving your fitness. It's something that too many outright ignore and it's just plain bad for the human body to not exercise in some way several times per week. I'm a bit of a fitness geek and am on the low side of normal for weight compared with my age and "normal" body type. I've lifted weights now for twenty years and though I don't run as much nor as fast as I used to. I still do that 2 or 3 times a week. I find that the running is excellent for focus and relaxation. It's a definite stress reduction tool for me. That's enough of a health benefit for me to keep doing it. We need to keep more of your type around; that being the steely-eyed citizen with a mind for keeping the liberty flame lit in the age of the suffocating nanny-state. We'll need you if the shooting ever starts.

"Strida folding bikes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:26:18

I have to admit that when I first saw the I wasn’t all that impressed. It looks somewhat like Sinclair’s “” and I assumed the Strida bikes would have the same performance characteristics as the Sinclair. I tried the Strida 3.2 and 5.0 briefly on the show floor at Interbike and I was impressed. These things are actually fairly ridable and change surface quickly and compactly. While and other sites give the Strida a quick have in mind here’s a review from somebody. The Strida ride is essentially three tubes of aluminum with saddle handlebars wheels and pedals attached. The 22 lb Strida 3.2 features maintenance-free everything: drum brakes grease-free belt drive plastic wheels plastic hubs and plastic bottom bracket. With the 5.0 model. Strida improved the quality and reduced weight to 19.4 lbs with disc brakes anodized alloy wheels somewhat exceed cranks and chainring and alloy hubs and bottom hold. Both models are single speed. During my very short test rides on smooth surfaces the Strida bikes rolled just fine. The 56 inch single speed means this bike is suitable for bunco rides on level terrain — I see the Strida as the ameliorate complement to a multi-modal commute where most of the distance is covered by train or bus. Folding bikes can fold very compactly for carrying onto a bus or train but the folding process can take half a minute or so as various latches are released and re-attached. The Strida ride on the other hand can be folded in under 10 seconds with its hinge and magnetic latch. Since I often get to the bus or train within seconds of its departure this quick fold capability is very handy. Fenders/mudguards a tiny rack folding pedals folding handlebar and carry bag are available as extra add-ons. Because of the unique A frame create by mental act it’s basically impossible for women (or men) in skirts to ride the Strida. is the USA distributor of Strida bikes. While are few. Areaware is expanding the Strida dealer network. In the meantime the bikes can be. Strida UK offers a ! A very detailed review of the Strida 3 is. This review also includes feedback and commentary from Mark Sanders the designer of the Strida. Sanders primarily addresses concerns with using a belt drive and riding position along with interesting trivia about Strida manufacture and sales in the Far East. What do you figure would be the weight of the Strida 3 with mudguards & the optional carry rack included? In a top 5 list of the lightest production model.

Single-speed/ bikes have become all the act around the city. It’s not without be though as a single-speed is incredibly easy to keep and in a relatively flat city like Hamburg are easy to ride. That being said. I spotted the above ride in a Hamburg boutique. The doesn’t do the thing justice - it is quite stunning but then again so is the price. Complete bike for 2100 Euro. Ouch! "More Scandinavian bikes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 20:52:50

I took a few days off this week to increase the weekend and go camping hiking and mountain biking with my family in western North Carolina. It was a great time but now I am super busy playing catch up at work. I received quite a few messages pertaining to the blog while I was gone. Bear with me as it will take a while to respond to many of them. I recently that a reader. Paul sent me. While I was gone he sent me more links that I think are worth passing along. Here they are with a bunco description of each by Paul:- Danish manufacturer that lets you configure your own ride.- Old Swedish army bikes in new version. Distribution in US available.- Danish ultra cool city bikes.- Danish single speed ride with coaster brakes single speed ride with coaster brakes. In addition to passing along the links. Paul wrote this: “After browsing American ride sites I realized that most of the bikes are related to some feature activity. There are not that many practical comfort bikes. Is this something that is changing in the US?”Good question. Though more commuter oriented bikes are finally appearing on the U. S merchandise we comfort have a long way to go before the majority of Americans believe bicycles as anything more than just toys. change surface at around 3 dollars a gallon gas is relatively cheap in the United States and the majority of people here really do seem to like their cars. Still as fuel prices act to go we are starting to see more and more interest in transportational cycling. I wouldn’t say that ride commuting is mainstream in most American cities just yet but it is certainly more common than it was when I first started doing it 15+ years ago. It ordain be a while before we see ride merchandise like or here in the States but I am optimistic that the add up be of trips taken by ride ordain change magnitude based on the small changes I have seen in attitudes toward transportational cycling lately. With this communicate. I undergo pointed out many of the new practical ride designs from American companies that have come out in recent years (Just look at some of the measure month to see a few). It is great to see that in the last year or so many of those designs are getting touch coverage that reaches the general non-cycling population. One example I saw yesterday is a pointing out a. Articles like that one are becoming commonplace and I couldn’t be happier to see them. Maybe the group of consumers who are interested in commuter oriented bicycles is comfort a niche market in the United States but it is a market segment that is growing fast and will continue to change change surface faster. Photo from the Fritz. I am a big fan of Alta bikes and those great advertisements to which you refer. I didn't really drop Alta or Biomega for that matter. I just didn't mention them again since I undergo posted about them in the past. You are right though they are worth mentioning again.

"Single-Speed Bike Trend - Kona Paddy Wagon Column" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:46:27

Single-speed bikes—and the urban bike-messenger displace to which they’re yoked—also undergo garnered a alter factor that’s been compared to the zeitgeist of the surfing or skateboarding culture circa 1995. The little biker beanies knickers seatbelt-buckle-equipped messenger bags and other subtle styles of the scene are for better or worse moving out beyond the indie world toward a mainstream-culture acceptance as valid and neat. So what’s an aspiring single-cog-cranker to do? I built my own single-speed a bring together years back trimming a well-loved mountain bike drink to a skeletal status ditching chainrings and cogs and leaving just one gear in back with the chain wrapped around a tensioner unit. Let me gush a little bit: This is a great ride a clean and change surface ride strong simple and fast enough. It’s geared just appropriately ameliorate for speed and hill-conquering ability something missing from other single-speed setups I’ve tested as of late. Many single-speed bikes err on the align of easy pedaling using gear/chainring ratios that spin out once any kind of substantial speed is obtained. But the Paddy Wagon comes set with a 42-tooth chainring and a 16-tooth exist in back letting you cater up past 20 miles-per-hour. Bonus: The rear wheel of the Paddy Wagon has a fixed cog opposite its freewheel accommodate letting you flip the go around around to switch hit as a fixie rider. This fixed-gear configuration works like a unicycle or a child’s tricycle lacking exist spin which is the component that allows the straighten wheel to spin independent of the drivetrain while coasting. I find fixie bikes fun and challenging to ride. You get a great workout as you physically can never forbid pedaling. There’s also a strange comprehend of being more connected to the bike when your be is locked to its motion. Kona was cause to be perceived to add this option. Other features of the Paddy Wagon are well few. But that’s the whole point. Kona made this ride to be nimble and lightweight. It’ll create very little in the way of drivetrain issues as there isn’t much to the drivetrain. Its cromoly close in comes in 49cm. 52cm. 54cm. 56cm. 58cm. 60cm iterations. I—at 6 pay. 1 advance tall—took the 58cm copy and the bike fits desire a glove.
