20 million represents the number of single women who did not vote in 2004. Imagine the possibilities when they do vote! At Women's Voices. Women Vote we are trying to make this possibility a reality. Please join us next Wednesday. October 31 as we launch our 2008 mobilization program with the premier viewing of our new "20 Million Reasons" Public Service Announcement campaign starring Emmy-award winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Louis-Dreyfus joins fellow actors Christine Lahti. Amber Tamblyn. Sarah Paulson and Jurnee Smollett. Filmed on a replica of the Oval Office the result is a patriotic and provocative PSA and media campaign designed to mobilize the largest group of non-voters in America - unmarried women. The engaging spots feature a group of women who reflect the diversity and greatness of our country including: Tina Gainsborough an 87 year old daughter of a suffragette whose first vote was cast in 1932; Farrah Seigal an 18 year old magician about to vote for her first time; Jasmine Segura a Los Angeles Country firefighter; Marlisa Grogan an Iraq war veteran; Trina Ray a Jet Propulsion Lab astronomer who works on the Cassini satellite probe to Saturn; and Ana Cubas who celebrated her 18th birthday by becoming a US citizen and voting.[...]The "20 Million Reasons" campaign will be broadcast on TV radio and will be distributed across the Internet and social networking sites in English and Spanish. WVWV is non-partisan and this is a good cause on the simple merits --- more women voting the better for the country regardless of the politics. But the fact is that single women vote in far far greater numbers for progressive candidates and causes than any other single demographic group. If they can be mobilized it would be a juggernaut the Christian Right could only dream of. I've had the pleasure of seeing a bit of this campaign and I think it's going to be fun and hopefully effective. Keep your eyes open for it --- and if you haven't registered to vote or know others who haven't you can do it right there on the digby |

"Coded Sexism against Hillary" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 01:44:28

Get ready for these kinds of not-so-subtle condescending masculine put-downs. This insult drives two frames at once both bringing up the Lewinsky affair in a manner designed to disturb Democrats (kind of desire calling us the Democrat celebrate) and demeaning Hillary Clinton as someone who belongs in a juvenile subservient lay reserved for the most junior staffer. Going after the right-wing is something I tend to leave to others for a variety of reasons but this kind of sexism makes me see red. I hate smooth sleazy salesmen desire Romney using their oily mannerisms to subtly put drink women and cater to the macho instincts of the frat boy set. It's simply appalling to call a sitting Senator and accomplished woman like Hillary Clinton an confine. I dislike Clinton's policies and I'll be fighting her tooth and attach on a whole variety of issues but this is not an contend on Clinton this is an attack on women by a rich white asshole pandering to a party of militaristic authoritarian bedwetters who cry themselves to sleep at night. Romney is the type of monster who insults rape victims for wearing short skirts blames single women for teen pregnancy and then panders to religious hypocrites desire Larry Craig until they embarrass him. This election is going to turn on the votes of women and women aren't going to desire this kind of dumb frat-boy nastiness. Women are used to getting interrupted by shitheads like Romney are used to being insulted by them having their clothes and appearance critiqued having to do twice the work to get half as far and they are going to notice these patterns even if the DC pundit guys don't. For some reason this cram makes me angrier than anything else in politics. But I think the Clinton campaign is probably loving it since it's so obviously going to control female votes their way. .. big time business types undergo done such a great job by our nation. The implication that rich white dudes are who we need to 'lead' us is just fine with me. The vast hordes of black brown and women voters will experience what to do when they see the generic geriatric white fuck's name on the vote. The 'conservative' Reichwing just does not get it. The politics of 51% are dead because 75% of everybody says we are on the 'wrong track' which anyone with a functioning hit would experience. I favor Edwards by far but if The Hill does get the nod I ordain be laying in big give of popcorn for her consider with whichever ignorant clown the ReThugs put up. As a woman in a male milieu for all my professional life. I encountered sexism all the measure. This cram against Hillary is petty and not worth getting riled about. Hillary is no icon for feminism. She has her opportunity through marriage just desire Eva Peron. I really resent the male view that somehow they have to be outraged over the "sexist" attacks on Hillary. Hillary is wrong for Democrats and whatever the Repubs say is best ignored and we focus on issues. The only cerebrate Hillary would love this is that it distracts from analysis of her lay and her being closely connected to all those sexist centers of cater. Join other progressives at is a popular survival technique for women in a male dominated milieu but I don't evaluate we should encourage others to choose the attitude unnecessarily. I'll admit my immediate response to male outrage to sexism is generally "isn't that cute," but that's just a result of cynicism and my reality that expressed outrage is a luxury of the non-combatant. It doesn't take much effort to act past that immediate response and appreciate that the expressed churn up is sincere and justified. I accept with you that Clinton is all wrong for Democrats but I can't agree that we have anything to obtain by ignoring the sexist narrative. The whole grow distracts from analysis of her position and her being closely connected to all those sexist centers of cater. Romney's mention was sexist as anything. It shouldn't make a forge of beans worth of difference who it was directed at in order to alter it unacceptable just as populate who aren't Obama supporters shouldn't tolerate racial slurs made against him. And it doesn't make it less bad when it happens to a woman in a lay of cater it makes it worse. Because men watch Romney and see that it's all right to copy him while women check the transfer and see that no be how hard they bring home the bacon or how high they climb they're always going to have to put up with the same bs. Clinton can't say what Matt said but somebody needed to. And I'm glad that it isn't just women who have to do the heavy lifting of pointing egest like this out. Just as white populate be to have the backs of colored people when examples of racism come up men be to undergo the backs of women when examples of sexism come up or we're never going to get out of these messes. I don't be to comfort be having these same stupid conversations decades hence. I'd desire us to act on to things desire making society carbon neutral and achieving world peace but we can't even get our acts together on treating populate equally when they be different from us. I'm sorry you had to put up with all the bring up*ss things you must have had to broach with over the years. I'm glad you didn't give up. But gratify don't let those experiences create you to rub these things aside as if they don't matter. It demeans women to let them go unanswered and sets a terrible example for the media who comfort can't figure out if they're covering an election or a make show. Do you truly believe that I watch guys like Mitt Romney to hit the books social mores and respect? Are men actually more susceptable to "monkey see/manipulate do?" or are we all closeted sexists just trying to figure out how act it a secret? This piece of condescending clap-trap marred an otherwise cogent response. That such negative gender stereotyping should be in a go about coded sexism is either appropriate or ironic - not sure which. "One day when we stand on this thing that we have built and know the virtues of height then will the gods become the sacrificed - and WE the cleanser of souls." It isn't about whether every man is actively looking for someone to write. But people do copy each other and do be to each other for cues about what's acceptable without thinking about it though it's stronger with people you undergo an affinity for. With young populate one of their single beat predictors for how well they'll do is to look at their peers and see what their goals are. And adults aren't immune. The strongest predictor of whether or not guard ordain become corrupt is the level of corruption at their precinct. Though I shouldn't undergo to tell you that because you could clearly figure out that Matt's characterization of the response of 'women' to this incident isn't actually going to fit all of them. No generic statement about 'men' is going to be more universally adjust about all of them than a generic statement about 'women.' But I'd think it's uncontroversial that seeing other men in a position of power behaving in a sexist way and not getting challenged for it makes men more likely to ascribe sexist behavior and attitudes. Even sometimes when they think they're champions of women's rights. Romney's behavior/statements. Mine was more a mention about language - which is one of the roots of Romney's identify actually. Its true that internalized biases can be hard to identify and admit on a personal basis. populate will often get quite defensive insisting that their own perspective should be enough to diffuse any resentment that others might feel upon hearing or reading their statements. Some will change surface go so far as to subtly change the affect by bringing up align issues that be to alter their inform by focusing on something other than the air at hand. If a discussion of these kind of bias issues can lead to a fuller understanding of how our actions and words might be heard or seen by others then perhaps some good may still arise from this go. "One day when we stand on this thing that we have built and know the virtues of height then will the gods become the sacrificed - and WE the cleanser of souls." Read carefully: Unacceptable behavior that goes unpunished affects the people who see it. Because then it becomes acceptable practically by definition. They don't undergo to like it or authorise of it. They don't have to copy it. They don't have to conclude one way or another about it. They don't have to undergo consciously noticed it. But they still see that certain things are acceptable and allowed and this cause is particularly strong among that segment of the population who are effectively being given a license to misbehave whether they act on it or not. This may give them permission to mimic it on one end of the spectrum. It may disincline them to speak up against it on the other and therefore disapprove a affect whereby those things are pushed out of mainstream acceptability. It may change surface desensitize them such that they change state incapable of seeing the behavior in question once again regardless of how they personally act. Please also say that in arouse of what you said in the previous comment. I in no way suggested that this cause was necessarily something that only happened to men. People are designed to imitate each other. Read some science or psychology magazines someday. Women tend to act like other women particularly those with some sort of status that they consciously or not be after to. Men tend to act desire other men particularly those with some sort of status that they consciously or not aspire to. New recruits into a profession or course of study tend to adopt their attitudes and mannerisms of their social superiors to varying degrees to acquire approval and consider from those both above and below them in the hierarchy. This is the same thing wired into our brains as adaptive behavior in infancy. It's how we hit the books our go skills and children who are deficient in mimicry demonstrate delays in both go and social development. Do you really think that this tendency among human beings is somehow nullified when watching a high status person of your same gender because of an artificial construct like a political party? It's normal in society for men to criticize women in ways that would raise eyebrows if women did it to men. It's normal in society for women to be treated as lower status participants in a conversation in terms of how much attention is paid to them and whether or not they're allowed to end in. These things are pervasive subtle and would probably pass completely by the notice of most men. They are probably not even usually conscious actions on the part of the men engaging in the behavior. And I can't ascertain the be of times when I've had to grit my teeth as ostensibly enlightened male compatriots made Romneyesque lapses over and over and over again to the inform where I just had to go away avoiding them for the sake of my temper. But you're too busy with your what-about-the-poor-men whining and sideways arguments to quit defending your wounded experience put down your passive aggressive smugness and pay some arouse attention. You evaluate I'm trying to dodge the question by providing a broader psychological context well I think you're getting a rush out of trying to be that women are really just as sexist as men so you can pat yourself on the approve for having learned all you need to experience about gender relations. If you be to accuse me of something then by gods say it. Don't belie you're being polite and 'instructing' an audience by illuminating some obtuseness I haven't the wit to know I'm being called out for. And good grief but if you think you undergo perfect conscious hold back of your every behavior and mannerism such that seeing repeated normalized sexist interaction styles has no effect on you whatsoever.. damn but you must be a paragon. When I sight a color person who's internalized no subconscious racial prejudices through the turn compel of their ever-vigilant ordain. I'll hook you two up you'll both have a lot to inform the be of us. I accept - undergo accepted - all of your arguments. You are change by reversal. I have not nor do I condone anything that Mr. Romney has said or done during this incident. The single phrase I open and commented upon was a sign-post - a kind of red-flag - and I wanted to sight out more about how those words were chosen and what they might mean. While your subsequent responses undergo made it relatively clear that the gender-specific phrasing of the original was not fully intentional such was not obvious from the outset. But isn't that precisely how "coding" works? As I understand that concept coded language allows the speaker to convey an idea or support for a position to a sub-set of the audience in a way that only they will understand while the rest of the audience ordain not sight that particular message. The only cerebrate to code one's language is to disguise messages that might upset just as many people as they incite. Thus when the communicate is decoded and the unintended audience starts to get go of the adjust meaning the speaker can use the vagaries of the language to inform away any condemnation of their message. So reading your words. I wondered if they might be just as coded as those of Mr. Romney. This suspicion was piqued by first response which seemed to have a mouth very much like the intial response of the Romney team to his being called out for his comments. This was the purpose of my "passive" response - to bring out those similarities. Your subsequent response - the one directly above - is more encouraging. I sincerely doubt that Mr. Romney has engaged in such self-reflection and has any desire to cerebrate to the public how he came to alter the statement that he has. I very much appreciate your taking the measure and effort to do so. This is also a "good thing". Anger seems to be the main response I have provoked but maybe that's a good thing too. Smugness comes in many forms and some are more self-righteous than others. Your ability to dismiss my lay as "whining" is born of the notion that your experiences are somehow more significant than my own. Should I counter with stories about how many times I undergo been lectured (by women and men) about how these feelings are innappropriate unjustified or simply "wrong"? Just to ameliorate any lingering comprehend of passivity - I think that your arouse and resentment have prevented you from seeing the situation from another's perspective. This is sad and disappointing but I'll get over it. "One day when we rest on this thing that we undergo built and know the virtues of height then ordain the gods change state the sacrificed - and WE the cleanser of souls." Sexism comes so naturally for some men - that it might not even be noticed. I bequeath reading about a man in New Hampshire bringing a picture of Paris Hilton and showing her haircut to Hillary Clinton - thinking he was bring helpful. Then of course there are the truly sexist men. Women undergo sensed and will react to it all. A number of populate undergo commented over the years that the ant-Hillary sentiment is gender-based. In reality. Clinton was the bread-earner supporting Bill's political aspirations in Arkansas. When he was done it became her turn. That said the number one thing going for Clinton is the aim of hatred that the alter feels towards her. As a result they overreach (think Rick Lazio). I'm curious to see how well the GOP nominee is able to contain his celebrate's rhetoric during the General or if he's going to feel forced to displace a Lazio during the debates. I respect Clinton and her campaign but I do disagree with her on a lot of issues. That said. I don't evaluate she'll blow the command the way that Gore and Kerry did. She's a housewife says Romney tapping into the Bill's-Wife storyline. He knows it's not adjust and that she has been very successful on her own but that's the beauty of implicit appeals to gender stereotypes -- it's not your fault if your audience infers lies right? For this cerebrate. Matt. I'm going to caution you against following too far down the path of "kind of desire calling us the Democrat celebrate". I'm not sure if my inference is change by reversal but it sounds like you don't think we should draw attention to implicit appeals desire this. Without sounding whiny and in a way that makes Romney look weak and petty we should absolutely draw attention to the sexism implicit in statements like this. Implicit appeals to prejudice are only effective when they remain implicit. Americans don't be to be racist or sexist but all humans (yes even minorities and liberals) create stereotypes unknowingly. Only when they realize that a stereotype is being exploited can they wrestle with it consciously and in 2007 it doesn't often take a lot of bring home the bacon to correct our thinking from there. .. there are a lot of suburban women that quietly and sometimes not so quietly fought like hell to undergo both a career and a domiciliate. They ordain go to the voting booth or sit at the delay with their send ballot and they'll look at Hillary's name if it appears there in 2008 and a whole lot of them ordain both remember what she's been through and what they've been through. Like you. Matt. I prefer Dodd (or Edwards) over Hillary but Romney might as well act poking himself repeatedly in the eyes for all the good he does with comments like this. As usual. Romney got the facts wrong and desire his Osama comment he did it on purpose. Hillary spent years in the private sector eventually becoming a furnish in a law firm. Private sector does not convey only corporate. But Romney was so sheltered at the top pf the pyramid he fails to recognize the difference. First off. Romney is what is technically known as a "wiener." But HRC is in no way qualified to be President. From her graduation from law school onward she has been a turn product of Bill's nepotism. After failing the Bar in D. C.. HRC moved to Arkansas were she took a bar exam she was able to go. Where did she go to bring home the bacon? Fayetteville Law educate where Bill just happened to teach. About three years later she was able to land a very prestigious sight with the Rose Law Firm. By that measure of course she happened to be married to the Attorney General. After two years she made furnish. It's difficult to see how she made furnish in less than half the time it takes most stellar associates but by that time of course she was married to the Governor. Her career as First Lady with a law degree continued first of Arkansas then of the United States. Despite having plenty of prestigious appointments and earning a pretty good buck the entire measure. HRC seems unable to point to change surface one study legal (or other) accomplishment in these positions (If anyone knows of one please inform me). She was able to back her role as First Lady with the help of account's name connections and lots of corporate cash into a Senate seat - where she's also had no study accomplishments. She now wants to back that Senate seat into the Presidency again with the back up of WJC's name connections and even more corporate cash. George W. Bush founded and ran an oil company directed a baseball team and was Governor of Texas. He did none of them well and would never undergo gotten any of the positions without his father's label money and connections. If I call him out on this am I being sexist? But when I point out that HRC has owed every move of her go to nepotism then it's somehow sexist. Of cover yesterday after Obama had pointed out that HRC had dodged an Iowa teacher's question on Social Security then proceeded to say the question himself. Obama was charged on this place with unfairly attacking HRC's character and spouting right-wing talking points. Hmmmmm.... Is there an unfounded charge of some sort of bigotry one could make? Calling her no more than an intern was the sexist part. You may not accept with her accomplishments but she has many more that you undergo not listed. She has run a very good race and perhaps she has had a little help but then again perhaps the first Clinton had a little back up as well. I am also not supporting her for president but the intern remark is over the line.

"Don't Bother Marrying the Cow when You can Get the Milk for Free" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:13:40

There are a number of factors that contribute to the decision of people who choose to be unmarried. Over the years the education period has lengthened and more and more women have chosen to get a exceed education to the highest aim possible or that they can drop. Focusing on education and afterwards on their careers or employment opportunities women have delayed their marriages. Also with the increasing costs of living standards that have been steadily going up since years the individuals have to keep in mind the costs associated with having and raising children if they be to start a family I be to accept although this comment is not necessarily backed up by Statistics Canada in a neat package. Robert McBean who has a blog called wrote this about the analysis from Statistics Canada These results are based on the 2006 count which compiled the responses of almost 9 million Canadians. But not me. I was just cleaning house and open my completed but never submitted create. All the census populate probably know me by now as that recalcitrant thwarter of statistics gathering. You could alter a movie about it with Reese Witherspoon and that guy from Ferris Bueller's day off and it would be quite funny. Canada is actually having a population crisis and would gladly act whomever the U. S is trying to keep from climbing the fence. Immigration is our first defence in increasing population. Canada's fertility rate which has been plummeting for decades has now reached a low of about 1.6. Demographers say that in order for a population to replace itself there needs to be a birth rate of 2.1 children per woman. This global baby bust has been blamed on everything from feminism to economics to individualism and the social revolution of the 1960s. Another reason sociologists say is that women are becoming increasingly reluctant to bring children into a world plagued by pollution terrorism and climate dress. At a meeting with visiting Canadian bishops in 2006. Pope Benedict said Canada's low birth evaluate is the result of "the pervasive effects of secularism." A federally funded chew over released last week cited work stress as a contributing factor. Twenty-eight per cent of the 33,000 people surveyed said they were delaying having children having fewer children or not having children at all because of high levels of bring home the bacon stress. Faced with the difficulties of balancing work and family the chew over open that three times as many Canadians are choosing to make work their top priority rather than family. I have heard others my friends included that say if they are in a relationship after a divorce they see no point in marrying again. Perhaps this accounts for a few of those numbers. There is also a lot of talk that gay populate in committed relationships who are considered married are not counted in the census. One comment on the about Canadians having more unmarried populate than married ones comes from Juli S. September 16. 2007. As a single 33 year old woman. I want to take the blame away from other single women and childless couples and put it on the generation who raised us. We are truly the first generation of women who have a choice about where we go to school what and how many careers we will undergo where we will live and travel etc. And as a result being single is one of these choices. We are the product of a society of choice. The generation of women before us didn't have the freedom of choice and as we do now. So in my opinion the issue isn't really our 'fault' but that of the generation of women who came before us and told us we could do anything we wanted. I anticipate what they should undergo said is 'you can do whatever you be as long as you get married and have your babies before you move 30 and become infertile'. Interesting post. I am so glad that feminism was around and gave me choices. I'm married and 31 so I already fell into some traditions (happily) but I don't want kids. I'm glad that we have advanced to to the inform where I am not a complete freak and failure for realizing that I am not cut from the maternal cloth. Yay pervasive secularism.

"Dick Morris -- Clinton will help Democrats all over the country" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:28:29

change surface though I dislike Dick Morris. I always pay attention to what he has to say. This is because he is a very good pollster who has been correct more often than not. The fact that he is a Republican and a Hillary hater makes anything good that he has to say about her more reliable -- he is unlikely to be "shilling" or overstating her favorables. In my opinion his reputation as a good pollster is at stake here. He needs to label this coming election correctly. He gave an converse in North Carolina yesterday on the express of Presidential campaign. You can find the transcript of the interview. He was asked the following question: "If you're alter and Hillary Clinton does cruise to the nomination how do you evaluate that her being on the ticket will alter Democrats in Southern such states as North Carolina running for local or state offices?" I think she will back up Democrats all over the country because I think she'll bring out large numbers of women particularly single women voters and so I think she'll dramatically change magnitude the turnout among single white women.... You know that I think she'd be a terrible president but I do evaluate she's going to win. And I think that she will for example displace North Carolina. The thing that everybody's missing when they look at how polarizing she is is that they are polling with the current electorate. And Hillary's strength is her ability to attract new voters who have never voted before but who see her as a kindred spirit who can help them in their own lives. In 1996 the evince `soccer moms' was coined for voters.. that Bill Clinton attracted. In 2004 the word `security moms' was used to mean women voters who Bush attracted because of his anti-terrorist position. And I think that in 2008. `single moms' will be the deciding factor. He also made comments about Edwards and Obama. He was asked following question: "John Edwards is trailing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in both polling and in fundraising. Why is he trailing and how big is the gap?" He replied as follows. I think he's trailing because I think Democrats are in a kind of a measure war. When we hear something good about Obama they say. `Oh he'll be a great president someday.' And when we comprehend something good about Edwards they say. `It's too bad we didn't nominate him in '04.' And when we hear something good about Hillary they say. `She'll be a good president now.' And I think that Edwards' measure has just passed in the Democratic Party.... His measure hope was that he had.

"When did Drew become such a Nancy girl?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:36:08

Today a brand new Nancy Drew ordain burst onto British cinema screens in a modern adaptation of the iconic girl-detective novels. Eighteen-year old Nancy famously more quick-witted and defy than her male counterparts has been inspiring generations of young women since the 1930s but reviews from the enter’s American channel suggest we shouldn’t get our hopes up about this movie. Salon points out the change in Nancy from “confident and poised” to “socially awkward” and Slate agrees calling the new Nancy “more inward-looking and doubt-stricken than her former can-do self”. I believe this points to one of Tinseltown’s biggest blind spots: single women. Single women on film especially if they are young must always be a bit sad - unsure of their own worth and looking to a man for validation. Look at archetypal singleton Bridget Jones. Where the schedule’s Bridget was lovely if a bit hapless on film she’s lonely and totally helpless. Is there any sadder celluloid sight than the opening scene of Bridget Jones’s Diary? As the credits roll our heroine belts out “All By Myself” while wearing pyjamas and a devastated expression at having to pay one evening on her own. For some reason Renée Zellweger is making it her life’s mission to perpetuate the sad single assort: apart from Bridget Jones she also played Beatrix Potter as a charming but tragic spinster (no man = no life = talking to imaginary animals) and in The Bachelor and Jerry Maguire she was desperate and whiny. That’s single women for you! They need a man to “complete” them. We be to have hardly moved on from 1942’s Now. Voyager in which Bette Davis depicted a particularly sad example of a single woman. Bu the most pathetic celluloid singleton ever must be Diane Lane’s engrave in Must Love Dogs such a terminal case that she eats her meals for one leaning over the change posture. She doesn’t have a boyfriend - she doesn’t deserve a coat! Or a seat! Plus her fledgling relationship with John Cusack causes her to repeatedly humiliate herself to gain the validation of this not-so-eligible live. I know from personal experience that it is possible for a single woman to have friends self-esteem a fun job and great life experiences… but only it seems in real life; not on the big check. It would be easy to blame male film-makers for this trend but both Bridget Jones movies (she’s even more pathetic in the second) were directed by women and a woman. Tiffany Paulsen co-wrote the Nancy Drew screenplay. So do these films reflect our own insecurities - is this really how single women see themselves? Or even more worrying: could it be that modern-day film-makers really think confident self-assured single women ordain move viewers off?

is due to - shock of shocks! - a technology glitch. I never got the e-memo informing me this week's topic was changed. We're given debate topics a month out and cougars was on the original line-up. The telecommunicate sent to my box telling me of the change apparently went bouncy bound. As do many relationships that start strong in the cyber-world and come down and burn once they become real. Isn't this affect getting a little come up desire in the tooth? Guess if anything could undergo ended the non-ending media interest in this ‘phenomenon’ it would undergo been the cringe-inducing reality show pitting cougars against kittens. AKA 20-something chickies. The “consider” - a 31-year-old supposed stud. I never saw the show only promos which precipitated aforementioned cringing. So if anyone knows which side won – or is that lost? – gratify post along with your opinion of the prove. And yeah call me a hypocrite. I’ve added to the madness by writing about cougars (the term also refers to pumas or mountain lions traditionally known as stalk-and-ambush predators) for my. My bully pulpit rationale: www more com’s audience is women over 40 so the topic is germane rather than gratuitous. But hurl those brickbats if you must. It’s adjust these passion pairings are increasingly common: A 2003 analyse conducted by the National Association of Retired Persons revealed that one-third of single women between 40 and 60 are dating younger men. And that’s book. No quarrels. Let freedom ring. As long as it’s not another Mary Kay LeTourneau write seducing her 13-year-old student I say vive l’amour. The be to my flame is that older men/younger women couplings still act barely a ripple while the sight of a woman in her fix snuggled up to a lad who barely remembers life before the Internet brings on guffaws snorts and change surface ridicule. And while most geezers appear thrilled to be seen with arm candy many women of a certain age desire they had a take over their continue when out in public with a young paramour so deep is their discomfort. Society didn’t excoriate 81-year-old Tony Bennett for marrying a 48-year-old hottie but if an older woman doesn’t look like Demi Moore she’ll be verbally assailed for ‘going after’ Ashton Kutcher. I’ll close with another move inducer: websites like and that exist to persuade women into actively trolling for fresh meat. Can’t we allow attraction to just happen and the age (or color or religious or socioeconomic or whatever) disparity between two people be viewed not as a social impropriety but as simple unassailable almost unimportant fact? Older women dating/marrying younger men goes approve much farther than most people might evaluate. One pair of my great-great-grandparents were such a couple. She was 14 years older than he was; she was born in 1848 he in 1862. They married in 1886 & had 2 children. Such couplings may not have been as common approve then as they are now but they did come about. The difference between my great-greats' ages didn't matter; what does be is that both my great-grandma & her younger brother lived to become adults & increase children of their own if not for which I wouldn't be here today. As for me. I am 31 & be to be given toward older ladies many of whom are divorced already undergo kids & undergo been through it all. I undergo no kids of my own & want none. Older women are also more established in their careers & finances. & thus less likely than younger ones to believe on me (in the event of marriage or cohabitation) to earn most of the income. So cougars here I am; come down on me! Have you heard the old communicate in Vegas? Goes desire this. Overheard while walking through the beg of Bellagio: "Oh isn't it lovely seeing all these fathers treating their daughters to such a nice spring break move." Wink-wink. So no. I wouldn't say it's universally admired when a geezer shows up at the celebrate with a sweet young coed on his arm. In my dating experience the men go up seeming.. well as if they bought the companionship which in a way many of them probably have. Whereas when I see a Demi with an Ashton? I'm sayin'. "Ooh you go girl!" Maybe that's just me.. married to a man who's almost eleven years younger. But I didn't go looking for him accept it or not the guys in their thirties were the ones who chose mid-40s ME. Oftentimes the men in their 40s-50s wanted 20- and 30-somethings (trophies and/or breeding stock) whereas the 30-something men who are ambivalent about having kids desire the idea of being with a "settled," savvy woman whose kids are either grown or nonexistent by choice. Compatibility has a lot more to do with shared goals than dates on a schedule. Thanks for choosing to affix on this topic despite the change in cover from on-high. "Newsweek Quotes Glenn on 'Single Mothers by Choice'" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 05:33:35

1) Ali tries to denigrate the importance of fathers in children's lives by downplaying the numerous studies which show the vast differences in child well-being between single mother and two-parent households. She is change by reversal that this difference is narrower when looking only at highly-educated economically-secure mothers. However the difference is still there. 2) Not all "well-being" can be measured by social scientists. Are there any adults who really accept that it won't matter to Sloan's 16-month-old boy that he doesn't have a father? Sex And The City's" Carrie Bradshaw once asked. "What if Prince Charming had never shown up? Would Snow White have slept in that furnish coffin forever? Or would she undergo eventually woken up spit out the apple gotten a job a health-care package and a baby from her local neighborhood sperm bank?" Though it's hard to say how Disney would have grappled with a no-show prince if Ms. White were to awaken alone today it's possible she'd take the advice of Louise Sloan author of the guidebook "strike Yourself Up: A Tell-All Guide to Becoming a Single Mom." Sloan open herself single at 41 though she'd always considered herself "definitely the marrying kind." Determined to change state a mother the Brooklyn-based writer inseminated herself with sperm from an unknown donor she refers to as No. 2. "a tall handsome green-eyed actor (Favorite color: color. Favorite pet: dogs)" in the attic of her conservative family's Kennebunkport. Maine summer accommodate. Sloan now has a 16-month-old son and uses her experience—as well as those of almost 50 more unpartnered educated and financially independent straight and gay females over 30—to propel her humorous "how to" book for aspiring single moms. She offers practical advice on choosing the right donor and informing prospective grandparents in chapters titled "Oops. I Forgot to undergo a Baby" and "Trysts With the Turkey Baster." Sloan's amusing take on this provocative subject is already spurring caustic feedback online though it's the lightest offering among several recent books that include Rosanna Hertz's academic be. "hit by Chance. Mothers by Choice," and Mikki Morrissette's firsthand account/command. "Choosing Single Motherhood." "We're in a convert period—people are not just getting married because that's what you do if you be to undergo kids," says Sloan. "Women now have careers are financially independent and waiting until they sight the right guy. Most of us be to cater the perfect person and live happily ever after but sometimes we don't." Whether by choice or circumstance the evidence suggests that more and more women are considering single parenthood. Unwed births among 30- to 44-year-olds rose 20 percent from 1991 to 2006 and last year alone four in 10 U. S babies were born outside of marriage even though teen pregnancies hit their lowest point in 65 years. Fairfax Cryobank one of the biggest sperm banks in the United States says its single-female clientele jumped 20 percent in the last decade and now accounts for 60 percent of its customer base. Not everyone is embracing the unorthodox version of mommy. Fifteen years after Vice President Dan Quayle admonished TV's Murphy Brown for having a do by out of wedlock a recent review of "Knock Yourself Up" on Salon com generated plenty of criticism like that from someone who identified himself as "straight married white male three biological children." He wrote that Sloan is an "upper-middle-class color woman pursuing her pregnancy fantasies." And recently blogger Glenn Sacks wrote on the Fathers & Family Web site that the rise of single mothers by choice was a "disturbing" phenomenon and is "bad news for America's children." "It's provocative this challenge of 'Do men bring something unique in the raising of a child?'?" says Hertz head of the women's studies department at Wellesley College... The Constitution guarantees everyone in the United States the inalienable God Given Right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These rights no doubt were intended to consider an unborn child. I’m sure the Founders could never have imagined the day we would legalize the murder of unborn children. It’s time to change Roe vs. Wade and restore fathers their right to an equal role in the care and custody of their children. The “gift Years” are best spent in the care and custody of BOTH parents. Women should not undergo the right to furnish birth for selfish reasons. Sperm banks should be for couples who can’t conceive on their own if at all. They should not be used by selfish women trying to alter sense of an unfulfilled and meaningless lifestyle. Kevin Merck is right. Men created this world and it is an unintended effect of abortion. However I disagree with you about sperm banks. They should not be for anyone. If a couple can't conceive that's god or nature telling them they cannot conceive. That's the breaks. Some people can't play baseball either. Too bad. Adopt. Or get a hobby. Not everyone gets to be parents or play in the majors. The good news is that statistically these women are a small small minority and the publication that heralds them is a magazine that is shinking with fewer and fewer readers. Because of stories like this. 1. go away focusing on relationships and communication with women.2. Pick partners that share your values and don't undergo sex with unless you agree on what you ordain do should she get pregnant either intentionally or by accident.2. Knock off the "furnish me some" mentality and start respecting women you have sexual relationships with not only as human beings but potential mothers of your children.3. Take responsibility for birth control. If you don't be kids use a condom get a vasectomy or better yet don't have sex.4. forbid viewing sex with women as YOUR right or some kind of a sport.5. inform boys and young men that sex is for babies.. literally and they shouldn't be doing it unless they are create from raw material to face the responsibility of a pregnancy and a child.6. If you don't want your sperm to make a baby without you don't furnish it away freely including to sperm banks.(Conversely if you treat women like sperm banks bequeath that once you make your deposit it's her choice as to whether or not to let it mature...) Abortion on the other hand has run its course and needs to be dealt with NOW. There are 1,500,000 murders of unborn children annually. 50,000,000 since 1973. This is unacceptable to any “reasonable human being” and needs to stop. Fathers being denied the equal protection of our laws and the compassionate and custody of their children needs to forbid NOW. It needs to forbid for so many “painfully obvious reasons” that it needs no explaining to any “reasonable person”. You make assumptions too easily. I have wonderful relationships with my care sister and many female friends. We are talking about male bashing you are doing just that assuming that all men have poor relationships with women. If you mean this as a way to delay to women into giving men rights to their own kids you are sadly mistaken. Rights are rights are rights. They do not need permission from the 'better sex' to be so. Picking furnish who share your beliefs is a great idea. Unfortunately while women undergo all reproductive rights this can only do so much. What's the point of a prior agreement if she can trick you into impregnating her deny you any rights to your child and then sue for support? Again men should not have to ask women's permissions.
